Tom Bombadil Makes Season 2 Debut in the Lord of the Rings the Rings of Power

When it comes to The Lord of the Rings, there are so many ways in which fans can enjoy the stories of J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive world. There are the two movie trilogies that chart the course of the Fellowship and Bilbo Baggins, and then there is Amazon Prime Video‘s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which delves deeper into the history of Middle-Earth.

With the first season out of the way, fans will be eager to see just what the second season will bring, and now, we know that beloved character Tom Bombadil will be making his debut via Vanity Fair. Played by Rory Kinnear (Men, Penny Dreadful), it would be very interesting to see just the character will be portrayed in The Rings of Power.

A firm lover of nature and the world around him, Bombadil has often been overlooked when it comes to adapting the source material for audiences around the world. Aside from his appearance in The Hobbit films, he is missing from the original trilogy, as Peter Jackson deemed his part in the story to have no impact on progressing the plot.

Now, how that will play out in The Rings of Power is another matter altogether, as there is room within the lore to help explain this mysterious being that is seemingly one of the most powerful beings in Middle-Earth and also one that has little care for anything outside his realm. Bombadil’s appearance in the lands of Rhûn will set him on a collision course with the halflings Nori (Markella Kavenagh) and Poppy (Megan Richards), as well as the enigmatic Stranger (Daniel Weyman), who many are predicting to be a young Gandalf.

“When he finally crosses paths with the Stranger, you could say he has a desire to try to keep the destruction that has happened there from spreading to his beloved lands in the West. He nudges the Stranger along his journey, which he knows will eventually protect the larger natural world that he cares about. So I’d say our Tom Bombadil is slightly more interventionist than you see in the books, but only by 5% or 10%,” explained showrunner J.D. Payne.

That would certainly be interesting to see, and we don’t have to wait too long, as Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuts on August 29.
