Yasuke Loses Samurai Description for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Steam Japan Listing

For fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, the land of the rising sun has always been a dream setting for the conflict between the Templars and those who work in the dark, and that dream is about to come true in just two months’ time with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, this latest entry from Ubisoft has not been without trouble.

While the multiple delays have not helped its cause, there are also accompanying reasons as to why the conversation around the game has often veered into conflict territory. One of the key issues in that discussion revolves around historical accuracy, especially with the inclusion of one of the main characters, Yasuke.

Described as a samurai, the creative license used by the studio for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has not gone unnoticed by many, and it appears that meaningful change has been initiated, at least in Japan. As part of an update on January 15, Ubisoft has made a critical alteration to Yasuke’s character description on the Steam listing, as reported by Automaton.

He is no longer described and introduced as a samurai (侍) as before, instead, Yasuke is now defined simply as a legendary warrior (一騎当千の兵). Meanwhile, Yasuke is still referred to as a samurai on the Steam English page. On other digital platforms available in Japan, such as the Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, and Microsoft Store, Yasuke’s description remains as it was initially as a samurai.

For now, Ubisoft has not made any official announcements regarding this change in describing Yasuke on Steam in Japan. Whether it is a conscious choice or just a different use of language, it remains to be seen if, as a whole, this is the new direction that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is going in with the character.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch on March 20, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
