Tencent Alters Promotional Content for Light of Motiram After Sony Lawsuit

Tencent alters Light of Motiram promotional materials following Sony lawsuit over its similarities to the Horizon series.

To most eyes, the similarities between Sony’s open-world Horizon series and Tencent’s upcoming title, Light of Motiram, are undeniable. While both games are set to feature different gameplay formats, their visual style appears to share the same universe, prompting a legal challenge from Sony. Tencent has now responded to the lawsuit with swift changes to the game’s promotional material.

The move is predictable, especially with the strong indications that Light of Motiram may have initially been pitched as a Horizon mobile adaptation proposal from Tencent, which Sony ultimately rejected. With legal proceedings still ongoing, Tencent appears determined to limit potential fallout as much as possible.

In recent days, the company has abruptly altered, removed, and added multiple assets on the game’s Steam store page with one clear goal: to distance Light of Motiram from Horizon’s unmistakable image. In fact, it seems that the entire Steam page has gone offline.

What is Light of Motiram Doing to Avoid Legal Disputes

One of the most significant changes comes in the form of its key visual. Previously, it featured a protagonist strongly resembling Aloy, standing and gazing forward as the focal point, an image many saw as a direct imitation of Horizon’s promotional art. The updated artwork is far more neutral, replacing the protagonist with a small bird that has no visual or conceptual link to Horizon.

Tencent also revised the game’s description, officially naming the enemies players will face. Where they were once generically referred to as Colossal Machines, they are now called Mechanimals. Other promotional screenshots have been swapped out as well, now bearing far fewer resemblances to Horizon, including in the way the game’s open-world concept is presented.

Despite the ongoing dispute, Tencent is moving forward with development and currently plans to release Light of Motiram in Q4 2027. However, details about the game’s current production status remain shrouded in mystery.
