Switch 2 Secures Blighted, Drinkbox’s Twisted Metroidvania RPG

Blighted Confirmed for Switch 2 This Fall

Following its reveal during Summer Game Fest, Drinkbox Studios’ latest project has secured another major platform. During the recent Nintendo Indie World presentation, the studio confirmed that Blighted will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 later this Fall, alongside its previously announced PC release.

Best known for Guacamelee!, Severed, and Nobody Saves the World, Drinkbox is venturing into darker territory with Blighted, a psychedelic western action RPG that leans heavily into Metroidvania exploration and systemic combat design.

A Western Nightmare Twisted by Blight

Blighted casts players as the lone survivor of a devastated village, seeking to reclaim the stolen memories of their people. In this world, the dead were once buried with seeds planted in their brains, growing into trees whose fruit preserved memory and tradition. That cycle was shattered when Sorcisto consumed those brains raw, gaining immense power and unleashing a corrupting force known as the Blight.

Mechanically, the Blight is more than a narrative backdrop. It functions as a dynamic difficulty system that alters enemies, reshapes environments, and modifies combat encounters in real time. The more players harness it, the more the world reacts, opening hidden paths while increasing danger.

Combat Built on Risk and Momentum

Drinkbox describes combat as intense and deliberate. Players are expected to time attacks carefully, chain combos, and execute finishers while navigating increasingly hostile arenas. Boss encounters allow players to consume memories, expanding abilities at the cost of becoming further corrupted.

The result is a design loop built around power and consequence, reinforcing the game’s central theme of survival through sacrifice.

Blighted can be played entirely solo or in co-op, with both local and online multiplayer supported. That flexibility positions it as both a personal narrative journey and a shared challenge, something Drinkbox has increasingly leaned into with its recent releases.

Jim Guthrie Returns

Adding to the game’s atmosphere is a new score by Jim Guthrie, whose past work includes Sword and Sworcery, BELOW, and Nobody Saves the World. His involvement suggests an emphasis on mood and tone, complementing Blighted’s eerie and distorted Western aesthetic.

With its Switch 2 release now confirmed, Blighted becomes one of the more distinctive third-party titles slated for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware this year. A firm launch date has yet to be announced, but the Fall window is now officially locked in.
