GHOSTLESS Game Blends Action Adventure, Colony Building And AI Paranoia
Indie developer Coffeenauts has revealed GHOSTLESS, a new 2.5D action-adventure and colony-building hybrid coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The game is set in an alternate 20th century, 15 years after a Cold War cyber attack causes an experimental Soviet AI superintelligence to turn against humanity. Players take on the role of the Envoy, who is sent to investigate rumours of a facility where the AI is creating a secret weapon.
That mission soon grows into something larger. As the Envoy, players will search ruined streets, abandoned buildings, sewers, metro tunnels, bunkers and laboratories while gathering resources, finding survivors and building a resistance against machine oppressors.
Building A Resistance Means Leaving The Base Behind
GHOSTLESS is built around a loop of exploration, survival and base management. When players head out into the ruined city, they will scavenge resources, fight robotic enemies and search for survivors who can join the resistance. Those recruits are then brought back to base, where they can be assigned to crafting stations and help produce better equipment for future excursions.
The base camp is more than a safe zone. It becomes the foundation for progression, with its size, health, and status affecting how prepared the resistance is for greater threats. Coffeenauts is positioning it as the heart of the uprising, giving players a reason to care about who they rescue and how the camp grows.
Incursions Bring The Resistance Into Larger Battles
Some enemy strongholds will be too dangerous for the Envoy to take on alone, and that is where incursions come in. These set-piece battles in GHOSTLESS let players lead comrades into larger fights against android forces, issuing orders and pushing into fortified positions together. Winning these incursions opens new areas of the map, making the resistance’s progress feel directly tied to territorial gains.
It is an interesting structure for an action-adventure game. Rather than simply moving from one stage to another, GHOSTLESS seems to connect exploration, recruitment, crafting, and combat into a broader rebellion.
The Ghostless Make Trust The Most Dangerous Resource
The standout hook is not just the AI uprising, but the machines hiding inside the resistance. Known as the Ghostless, these android infiltrators pose as humans to sabotage the base from within. After returning from dangerous territory, players may find equipment damaged, operations disrupted, or a comrade dead, forcing them to investigate what happened.
To identify impostors, players will analyse clues, observe behaviour, and interview recruits through a contextual dialogue system. Getting it right keeps the resistance alive. Getting it wrong means condemning an innocent person, adding a moral cost to the game’s paranoia.
A Dark Science Fiction Hybrid From Coffeenauts

Coffeenauts describes GHOSTLESS as a mix of survival, exploration, colony simulation, investigation and action. Creative Director Fábio Rosa said the original idea stemmed from a desire to capture the paranoia of classic 80s science fiction horror, before the project expanded into its current hybrid form.
Visually, GHOSTLESS uses what the studio calls hi-fi pixel art, blending retro pixel graphics with modern 3D lighting and effects. That should help its ruined city, machine threat and underground resistance stand apart from more traditional survival games.
No release date has been announced yet. For now, GHOSTLESS is one to watch for players interested in AI rebellion stories, base-building pressure, and indie games where the biggest threat may not always be outside the walls.
