VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS Takes the Series Beyond the Arena
SEGA and RGG Studio have shared an extended look at VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS following its Summer Game Fest appearance, giving players a clearer sense of where the long-running fighting game series is heading next. The new instalment is currently planned to launch in 2027.
Presented by Producer and Creative Director Riichiro Yamada, Art Director Ryo Shibasaki, and Battle Director Yosuke Takeda, the showcase focused on the game’s story mode, battle system, and the writing team helping shape its narrative. For a series historically defined by technical one-on-one combat, VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS looks like a major creative shift.
A New Virtua Fighter Story Built Around Four Protagonists
VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS is moving beyond the structure of a traditional competitive fighter with a narrative-driven action-adventure mode. Built around the theme of crossroads, the story follows four protagonists whose lives intersect in the island city of Vilasapara.
The plot centres on a city where firearms are punishable by death, while an uneasy balance between crime syndicates begins to fracture. President Bato hopes to turn the Vila Fight Fest into a national sport as part of his reelection campaign, while a figure known as The Bakunawa Killer begins targeting martial artists.
RGG Studio Adds City Exploration and Choice Encounters
Vilasapara is described as the City of Martial Arts, with distinct areas including a walled central city, entertainment districts, and resort zones. In addition to the main storyline, players will be able to explore side stories and quests tied to different locations and local characters.
This is where RGG Studio’s involvement becomes especially interesting. The studio’s work on Like A Dragon and Judgment has often excelled at turning dense city spaces into personality-driven playgrounds, and VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS appears to be drawing from that same strength while keeping martial arts at the centre.
The Next Generation of Virtua Fighter Combat
Combat remains a core part of the experience, with the story mode featuring multi-opponent brawls and boss encounters. The game will also include a full Versus mode with local and online options, ensuring that traditional fighting game play still has a dedicated space.
The control scheme is said to carry forward the streamlined feel Virtua Fighter is known for, while expanding tactical depth and visual realism. That balance will be important, especially for long-time fans who want the series to evolve without losing the mind games and precision that made it distinct.
A Strong Writing Team Shapes the New Direction
The story team includes World Building Supervisor David Hayter, Lead Writer Brad Kane, Scenario Director Tsuyoshi Furuta, and Scenario Writer Shinji Yamamoto. Their combined credits span games, film, television, and major Japanese RPG franchises.

That writing line-up signals how seriously SEGA and RGG Studio are treating the narrative side of VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS. With a 2027 launch window now attached, the showcase positions the game as more than a revival. It is a reimagining of what Virtua Fighter can be when its combat is placed inside a larger world.
