Senua Expands the Hellblade Universe Beyond Its Old Formula

Ninja Theory has officially revealed Senua, a new action-adventure set in the Hellblade universe and launching in 2027.

The announcement arrived during the Xbox Games Showcase, where the studio made it clear that this new game is not being presented as Hellblade III. Instead, the shorter title reflects a wider creative shift. This is still Senua’s story, and it follows the psychological, cinematic, and mythic foundations of Hellblade, but the structure is being expanded to accommodate deeper gameplay and greater player agency.

For longtime fans, that makes the reveal especially interesting. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II stood apart because of their intense storytelling, audio design, and focus on the main character’s inner world. The latest looks like Ninja Theory’s attempt to preserve that identity while building a more traditional action-adventure around it.

Combat and Exploration Take a Larger Role

The biggest change is in gameplay. Ninja Theory says Senua will not become a pure combat action game, but it will give players more control during encounters, traversal, and puzzle solving.

Combat is being expanded around tactical choice. The heroine can approach enemies more directly, use stealth, and draw on a wider arsenal. The trailer shows her moving through encounters with more flexibility than before, suggesting a sharper balance between cinematic intensity and player-driven decision making.

Focus Abilities Shape Puzzles and Movement

Senua will also build on the character’s ability to perceive the world differently. Focus Abilities will support combat, traversal, and environmental puzzles, turning her perception into a more active part of the game’s systems.

Traversal is also being expanded to include faster movement, climbing, jumping, vaulting, and more vertical spaces. Ninja Theory is not calling this an open-world game, but its map will be more interconnected and roughly twice the size of Hellblade II.

Journeying Through Purgatory

The story takes place after both previous Hellblade games, with Senua trapped between life and death in a fractured vision of purgatory shaped by her childhood homeland. Her goal is to reach the afterlife and reunite with those she has loved and lost. Ninja Theory says the game will still resonate with existing fans, but it is also being built as a standalone entry point for new players.

With this next game, the studio needs to honour what made Hellblade distinctive while also answering the long-running question of what Ninja Theory could do if it brought more of its action-adventure history back into the world.

Senua launches in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, and PlayStation 5. It will also be available on day one through Game Pass and will support Xbox Play Anywhere.
