GTA VI Pre-Orders Are Off to a Huge Start

Calling Grand Theft Auto VI/GTA VI a major game launch almost feels too small at this point. Rockstar Games’ next open-world blockbuster has become one of the biggest entertainment events of the year, with publishers reportedly avoiding its release window, players counting down every update, and Netflix now involved in the next major marketing beat.

That hype is not just noise anymore. According to comments from Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, GTA VI pre-orders are already performing well above the company’s own expectations.

Speaking to Bloomberg after Take-Two’s latest earnings update, Zelnick reportedly described the game’s pre-order start as “exceptional”, while also calling demand “unprecedented” and “astonishing”. However, he stopped short of revealing how many copies have actually been pre-ordered.

Take-Two Is Not Sharing the Exact Number Yet

Zelnick reportedly said Take-Two does not want to share raw pre-order figures because the company cannot yet tell how those numbers will translate into final launch sales. In other words, a massive number of early pre-orders could mean demand is even higher than expected. It could also mean many players who would have bought the game at launch have simply committed earlier.

That distinction matters for investors. Pre-orders are useful, but they are not the same as lifetime sales. They can be cancelled, they can shift purchasing behaviour forward, and they do not necessarily prove how strong the long tail will be after launch. For now, Take-Two appears happy to say demand is far ahead of expectations without turning that into a hard public sales forecast.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirms that GTA VI will not use generative AI, with all content handcrafted by Rockstar Games.

Pre-orders for GTA VI officially opened on June 25. The game is priced at US$79.99 for the Standard Edition and US$99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. All pre-orders and purchases made before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, while digital pre-orders also include 1 free month of GTA+.

Digital players will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12, 1 week before launch. That early pre-load date will matter. For a game this big, launch-day demand is likely to be enormous, and many players will want to avoid waiting through a massive download when the servers are busiest.

Netflix Will Get the Next Big Look First

The next major marketing beat is Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, which is scheduled for August 27. Unusually, Netflix members will get to watch the preview first before it arrives later on YouTube. It is a striking move, but it makes sense for Rockstar.

GTA VI is no longer speaking only to core gaming audiences. Netflix gives the game a way to reach a much broader mainstream crowd ahead of launch. That also reinforces why Take-Two is being careful with expectations. The game is being treated like a cross-media event, but the company still needs to avoid declaring victory before actual sales are locked in.

Grand Theft Auto VI Could Be One of Gaming’s Biggest Launches

Even without an exact pre-order figure, the direction is clear. GTA VI is already tracking like one of the most commercially important game launches in years. Its challenge will not be visibility. The challenge will be whether Rockstar can meet the weight of expectation that has built up over more than a decade.

The base is already enormous. The previous entry, Grand Theft Auto V, has sold nearly 230 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. Matching that kind of long-term success will take years, not just a record-breaking opening week. Still, the early signs are exactly what Take-Two would have hoped for.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
