Dave Bautista Kratos Casting in God of War Is Now Official
Dave Bautista is officially taking over as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming God of War television series. Variety reports that the actor has now signed on to lead the live-action adaptation, confirming the casting after he entered talks for the role earlier this month.
The action star was being lined up to replace Ryan Hurst following an unexpected production setback. Hurst had originally been cast as Kratos and had already begun filming before suffering a torn bicep during a stunt in June.
The injury required surgery, with his recovery expected to prevent him from returning to production until 2027. Rather than delay the series that long, Amazon and Sony opted to recast the role.
Reshooting Kratos’ Existing Scenes
The change comes relatively deep into production. Filming began in Vancouver in February, with four episodes reportedly already completed before Hurst’s injury. With Bautista now taking over, the scenes featuring Hurst will need to be reshot.
Production is expected to resume in the coming weeks, allowing Amazon to move ahead without waiting until next year.
Prime Video has already given God of War a two-season order, with both seasons planned to shoot back-to-back. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, while Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first two episodes.

A Growing Cast
The new Kratos will star alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus, with the series adapting the Norse-era story introduced in 2018’s God of War. The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri.
The story follows Kratos and Atreus as they travel to scatter Faye’s ashes while navigating their difficult relationship and the increasingly dangerous world of the Norse gods.
The former WWE wrestler brings an obvious physical presence to Kratos, but his more restrained performances in films such as Dune and Blade Runner 2049 could prove equally important for a version of the character defined as much by regret and fatherhood as violence.
Still No Premiere Date
Amazon has yet to announce when God of War will premiere on Prime Video. The recasting has clearly created additional work, particularly with previously completed material now requiring reshoots, but this casting confirmation removes the biggest uncertainty surrounding the production.
After years of being regularly suggested by fans whenever a live-action Kratos entered the conversation, Bautista finally gets the chance to prove whether he can embody the Ghost of Sparta beyond the physical resemblance.
