Rev.Noir Reveals More of Its Deadly World and Action Combat
Konami has spent much of its recent resurgence returning to franchises players already know, but Rev.Noir represents something rather different. First revealed during February’s State of Play, the entirely new RPG initially offered little more than its striking anime-inspired presentation and a world threatened by a mysterious catastrophe.
Six months later, we finally have a much clearer idea of what Konami is building. The latest State of Play brought Rev.Noir back with new story and gameplay footage, introducing its central characters, revealing more of its real-time combat and confirming a 2027 release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Asch and Finé Must Stop the Lightfall
At the centre of Rev.Noir is Asch, an amnesiac young man guided by an Astral Ordinance instructing him to save as many people as possible. His journey changes after he meets Finé, a young priestess capable of using rainbow Astral Arts, and her protector, Diana.
Finé is already travelling to stop the lightfall, a celestial catastrophe that takes the form of a deadly rain capable of killing anyone it touches. Asch eventually joins her mission, with the group hunting the mysterious beings responsible for bringing the lightfall into the world.
Konami is already hinting that the story will not be quite as straightforward as simply defeating an obvious evil. Its latest tagline, “Beyond Justice, Annihilation Awaits”, suggests that the characters’ attempts to save the world could have consequences far greater than they expect.
Rev.Noir Mixes Action With Strategic Decisions
The new trailer also gives us our first substantial look at combat. Rev.Noir uses an action-focused battle system where Asch can freely move around encounters, chain attacks and activate different abilities in real time.
There are certainly shades of games such as Bandai Namco’s Tales series in the presentation, but Konami appears to be putting its own emphasis on strategic choices within those battles.
Systems including Astral Sigils and Kardieoses will allow players to develop different combat styles, with the company saying player decisions can meaningfully change how fights unfold. That should give players more control over how they build Asch rather than simply following a fixed set of abilities throughout the story.
More Companions Are Joining the Journey
Finé and Diana are not the only characters accompanying Asch. Konami has also introduced Cross, a gunfighter belonging to the Lizvia vigilante corps who serves as a guide for the group during part of their journey.
Diana herself is a member of the Holy City Guard who deeply respects Finé and is willing to put herself directly in danger to protect her. That growing party, combined with the new combat footage, finally makes Rev.Noir feel like something more tangible than the mysterious teaser we saw in February.
There is still plenty Konami is keeping hidden, but between its deadly golden rain, increasingly complicated ideas of justice and more expressive action combat, Rev.Noir is starting to become one of the publisher’s more intriguing new bets.
Rev.Noir launches sometime in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam.
