State of Play September 2026 Had Plenty to Talk About
PlayStation doubled up on September 3 with both a regular State of Play and a State of Play Japan, resulting in more than 30 games, expansions, release dates and surprises across the two broadcasts.
Rather than simply following the running order, we have arranged the biggest announcements by how significant, surprising or exciting they were, starting with the reveals most likely to dominate the conversation.
1. Final Fantasy VII Revelation Finally Has a Release Date
Square Enix closed the show with the biggest announcement of the night, confirming that Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches for PlayStation 5 on April 8, 2027.
The extended showcase gave us a substantial look at the final chapter of the remake trilogy, including exploration aboard the Highwind, grapple guns, Chocobo traversal and the new FITS combat system built around character synergies. After years of speculation about how this enormous project ends, the finish line is finally in sight.
2. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Is the Big Expansion Hunters Expected
Capcom gave us a deeper look at Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a major expansion arriving in 2027 with a new story, monsters, mechanics and the Skybound Eyrie locale.
Elder Dragons are returning to the spotlight, including newly revealed Gundoraja, while the new Boost Action promises additional options during hunts. Tokyo Game Show attendees will also get the first public hands-on with a hunt against Arakeeta later this month.
3. Marvel’s Wolverine Is Ready to Let the Claws Out
With launch now less than two weeks away, Insomniac Games brought Marvel’s Wolverine back with its launch trailer at the State of Play presentation.
The footage puts more emphasis on Logan’s relationships with Jean Grey and Team X while mixing in plenty of brutal combat and new glimpses of allies and enemies. The PS5 exclusive launches September 15.
4. Until Dawn 2 Arrives in January
Firesprite Games confirmed Until Dawn 2 will launch on January 28, 2027 for PS5.
The new trailer returned to Blackwood Sanatorium before heading to Akishima Island, while once again teasing the branching choices and consequences expected from the horror sequel. Firesprite is also collaborating with AdHoc Studio on the project.
5. Metro 2039 Shows Off PS5 Pro Gameplay
4A Games offered the first PS5 Pro gameplay from Metro 2039 and locked in a February 4, 2027 release during the State of Play presentation.
The latest entry follows the mysterious Stranger through post-apocalyptic Moscow, combining the series’ familiar survival, exploration, stealth and combat in what already looks like another bleak journey through the Metro.
6. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Is Finally Happening
Bandai Namco officially revealed Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 for PS5, with the long-awaited sequel arriving in 2027.
Players will once again create their own hero, develop a personalised fighting style and step into another time-bending Dragon Ball adventure. After the extraordinary lifespan of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, a numbered sequel is a major moment for the series.
7. Ghost of Yōtei Is Getting Even Bigger
Sucker Punch Productions is not finished with Ghost of Yōtei.
The Complete Edition arrives October 1 alongside two substantial additions. Most Wanted introduces a combat survival mode with waves, bosses, unlockable weapons and playable characters, while Echoes of Sekigahara explores Atsu’s experiences during the historic battle.
8. Crimson Desert Is Already Getting a Huge Expansion
Crimson Desert is expanding with Charting the Unknown on October 15.
Pearl Abyss describes it as a sizeable new adventure for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane, with the State of Play trailer captured on PS5 Pro and showing even more of the game’s already ambitious mix of exploration and action.
9. Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV Adds 12 Cars and New Modes
Polyphony Digital revealed a two-part Spec IV update for Gran Turismo 7, arriving across October and December.
The sizeable update brings 12 additional cars, two circuits, Online Drift Trials, Shuffle Races and a Family Mode aimed at making the racing sim easier to enjoy across different skill levels.
10. Maneater 2 Brings Back the Shark Chaos
Tripwire Interactive finally revealed Maneater 2 for PS5 in 2027, one of the more interesting showcases at the State of Play presentation.
This time, the man-eating bull shark is loose inside an ultra-luxury private island theme park filled with unsuspecting guests, advanced technology and bioengineered predators. Eating, evolving and generally making everyone regret building a marine attraction remain very much the point.
11. Rhapsody in Scarlet Mixes Jazz, Magic and 1920s New York
Konami revealed Rhapsody in Scarlet, one of the more immediately distinctive new games in the State of Play presentation.
Set in 1920s New York, the action-adventure follows Magus Ellie Myers as she becomes tangled in a mystery involving magical beasts and a shadowy mafia organisation, with combat built around customisable combinations of magic and beast abilities.
12. Final Fantasy Resonance Adds Sephiroth and Drops a Demo

13. CONQ: Crown of No Quarter Wants Huge Shared Battles
CONQ: Crown of No Quarter made its debut at the State of Play presentation with an intriguing pitch centred around warfare in a shared open world.
Players will lead armies across land and sea, construct siege equipment and attack enemy strongholds as part of large-scale faction battles. There is still plenty left to learn, but the scale alone makes this one worth watching.
14. GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT Locks In March 5
GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT launches on March 5, 2027, with its newest trailer leaning heavily into fast-paced mobile suit combat.
Customisation remains a major pillar, with interchangeable parts affecting movement and fighting styles, additional weapon types, Tactical Skills and cosmetic MOD Skins that can recreate familiar machines such as the RX-78-2 Gundam.
15. Saros Gets a Free Zenith Update
Housemarque is adding more to Saros through the free Zenith update later this year.
Overlord Rush turns the campaign’s bosses into a consecutive challenge, while Eclipse Layers introduces a New Game Plus structure with modifiers, progression additions and further secrets. New accessibility options are also included.
16. Keeper Is Out on PS5 Now
Double Fine Productions brought Keeper to PS5 as a same-day release during the State of Play presentation.
The surreal, wordless puzzle adventure follows a living lighthouse and its seabird companion through a strange island threatened by spreading tendrils, making this one of the presentation’s nicest “you can play it now” surprises.
17. Daba: Land of Water Scar Returns With Another Look
China Hero Project title Daba: Land of Water Scar received a new trailer and a spring 2027 PS5 window.
The action RPG from Dark Star Games stars a clayman travelling through a fantastical world where the water has disappeared, featuring dramatic environments and imposing enemies. Another intriguing title coming out of the State of Play presentation.
18. Uncanyon Comes From the Team Behind Maquette
Graceful Decay revealed Uncanyon, a puzzle-first PS5 adventure coming in 2027.
The central mechanic involves manipulating converging realities, blending different versions of the environment together and then exploring what those combinations create.
19. Hunter’s Moon Brings Folk Horror to 17th-Century England
Hunter’s Moon stood out with a much more grounded horror premise during the State of Play presentation.
The first-person game takes place over a single night during the English witch hunts, putting players in control of an accused woman trying to evade capture while eavesdropping on villagers and uncovering the secrets of a fractured community. It arrives on PS5 on October 25.
20. Where the Seeds Fall Introduces CygamesEdge
Cygames unveiled a new experimental label, CygamesEdge, alongside its first title, Where the Seeds Fall.
Launching November 5, the action-adventure follows a soldier and a Fell Child descending through the World Tree towards a Blight-stricken surface, navigating ruins and dangerous vertical environments along the way.
21. Fate/Extra Record Gets Its January Release Date
Fate/Extra Record launches January 28, 2027 on PS5 and PS4.
The full remake expands the Moon Holy Grail War while reworking combat around its deck-building Command Card system.
22. The Eminence in Shadow Gets Its First Console Game
The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes brings the franchise to consoles for the first time in 2027.
The PS5 title focuses on roguelite combat starring the Seven Shadows and features an original story supervised by series creator Daisuke Aizawa.
23. SlashZero Has a Surprisingly Huge Demo
During the State of Play presentation, it was revealed that SlashZero now has a limited-time PS5 demo offering more than 10 hours of content, including three characters and boss fights.
The side-scrolling action roguelike launches in spring 2027.
24. Stupid Never Dies Also Gets a Demo
Stupid Never Dies launches October 21, but PS5 players can try its opening hours right now.
The bizarre zombie action game lets players steal abilities from powerful monsters, with demo progress carrying into the full release.
25. PlayStation Is Getting an Almost Life-Sized LEGO Console
Not everything shown at the State of Play presentation was software.
The new LEGO PlayStation recreates Sony’s original console and controller in a 1,911-piece set measuring around 26 cm wide, with the collaboration launching October 1.
Other State of Play September 2026 Announcements
There were plenty of smaller updates across the two State of Play broadcasts too. Digimon Story Time Stranger: A Hero’s Eternal Legacy brings around 50 additional Digimon in 2027, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World arrives December 3, and Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad is getting its first DLC this winter.
Rematch is crossing over with Blue Lock on September 24, while PlayStation Plus will add Mycopunk alongside Premium Classics Mega Man X: Command Mission, Dino Crisis 2 and the original Ratchet & Clank.
Konami also showed more Rev. Noir and confirmed a 2027 release, while World Phasebound Control Authority: WPCA was revealed as a Seoul-set supernatural action RPG targeting 2028. And for anyone already counting the days until Vice City, PlayStation unveiled Black and White Grand Theft Auto VI Limited Edition DualSense controllers launching alongside the game on November 19.
State of Play September 2026 Was Strongest at the Top
The September State of Play did not rely on one shock reveal. Instead, PlayStation stacked several substantial updates together, from finally dating Final Fantasy VII Revelation to showing off more of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 and Until Dawn 2.
There were also enough new names, such as Rhapsody in Scarlet, CONQ: Crown of No Quarter, and Uncanyon, to prevent the presentation from being entirely dominated by familiar franchises. With Marvel’s Wolverine almost here and 2027 already filling up quickly, PlayStation’s next 12 months are looking increasingly crowded.
