Physint Moves to Xbox After PlayStation Tried to Cancel It

One of Kojima Productions’ most important upcoming games has undergone a rather dramatic change of allegiance. Xbox will now publish PHYSINT, Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action espionage project that had previously been developed in partnership with PlayStation.

The shift is particularly striking given how prominently Sony originally introduced the project, which was presented as a major PlayStation collaboration, with Kojima describing it as both a game and a broader attempt to blur the lines between interactive entertainment and cinema.

PlayStation has now stepped away entirely, and according to Kojima, the project came much closer to disappearing than anyone realised.

PlayStation Intended to Cancel The Project in June

PlayStation confirmed that it had made the “difficult decision” to end its collaboration with Kojima Productions, while stressing that its long relationship with Hideo Kojima remains intact. Kojima subsequently provided considerably more detail.

Physint Moves to Xbox After PlayStation Tried to Cancel It

According to the director, Kojima Productions unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June that it would cancel the game. Rather than abandon the project, the studio spent the next three months searching for another company willing to keep it alive.

That search ultimately led back to Microsoft. CEO Asha Sharma said the company was honoured that Kojima had chosen the publisher for the project, while Kojima confirmed that the move expands their existing partnership beyond OD. The official announcement confirms that development remains underway.

The Partnership is Going Beyond Games

The partnership will not stop with OD and Physint. Xbox and Kojima Productions also plan to work together across film and television, continuing Kojima’s long-standing interest in pushing his projects beyond conventional game development.

That fits naturally with Physint, which has long been described as a project intended to challenge the boundaries between games and cinema, though there have been no specific announcements of film or television adaptations of the game itself.

Another major unanswered question is platforms. The upcoming title was originally announced as a PlayStation project, but neither has clarified whether the publisher change also changes where the game will eventually launch.

For now, the only certainty is that the game remains alive. PlayStation was prepared to end the project, but Kojima Productions was not, and Xbox has now become the partner willing to see where this particular espionage story goes next.
