SEGA Netflix Adaptations Expand With Three New Projects
SEGA and Netflix are expanding their partnership with three new projects based on some very different corners of the publisher’s catalogue.
Following their previous collaboration on Sonic Prime, which ran for three seasons, the two companies are now working together on a new Sonic animated series, a Crazy Taxi film and a live-action adaptation of Stranger Than Heaven. As reported by Deadline, none currently has a confirmed release window.
Sonic Returns to Netflix With a New Animated Series
The first project is another Sonic animated series, this time aimed specifically at younger viewers. SEGA’s Toru Nakahara and Carlos Stevens are producing, with the series expected to mix energetic comedy with more emotional storytelling.
Its broader themes will reportedly centre on children wanting to feel connected, accepted and part of a wider group. That makes it distinct from Sonic Prime, even if Netflix and SEGA are once again turning to animation for the franchise.
Crazy Taxi Is Getting a Film Adaptation
The second project is a film based on Crazy Taxi, arriving while the company is also preparing a new game in the series for 2027. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo behind the recent The Naked Gun reboot, have been attached to the adaptation. Toru Nakahara is also involved, although story details remain under wraps for now.
There is no indication yet of whether the film will directly adapt the games or simply use the franchise’s premise as a jumping-off point, but the choice of writers suggests the partners are leaning into the series’ chaotic, comedic side.
Stranger Than Heaven Is Also Heading to Live Action
The most surprising of the three is a live-action adaptation of Stranger Than Heaven, the upcoming title from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The game itself has yet to launch, making the adaptation an unusually early expansion for the property.
Nakahara is involved again, but the companies have not revealed who will lead the production creatively, or whether the adaptation will follow the game’s storyline directly or tell a separate story within the same world.
Nakahara summed up the intended tone of the three projects simply: “cute and cool” for Sonic, comedic madness for Crazy Taxi, and badass action drama for Stranger Than Heaven. For now, all three remain without premiere dates, but the announcement makes it clear that the teams involved are looking well beyond Sonic Prime as their partnership continues to grow.
