It’s hard to count just how many game adaptations are currently being developed by PlayStation Productions, ranging from feature films, television series, and even anime. Within just a matter of weeks, we’ve already seen at least three separate projects being announced. However, there’s one adaptation that was announced a while ago that has many curious about how it will be executed, and that is Until Dawn.
This horror game with interactive storytelling elements, crafted by Supermassive Games before being remastered for the current generation consoles by Ballistic Moon, is well-loved for good reasons. The campy story, the characters and acting, and of course, the many horrors that await just make for great fun. Now, if you were expecting a one-to-one rendition of the game on the big screen, you are sorely mistaken. We now know that the Until Dawn movie adaptation will be introducing its own twists and unique mechanics with a new trailer.
Considering how hard it would have been to replicate the decision-making and potential deaths that the teenage cast could possibly find themselves experiencing, the movie features a time-looping mechanic instead. The five teenagers trapped in a mysterious house must repeatedly die while trying to find clues in the next time loop, and it’s the only way they will be able to survive until dawn against fresh terrors.
While Peter Stormare will return as Dr. Hill, a familiar face within the larger franchise of horror games from Supermassive, the adaptation of Until Dawn seems to be only in name only. It will be interesting to see just how the filmmakers try to adopt certain mechanics from the game while weaving in their own take on things.
The Until Dawn movie is directed by David F. Sandberg (Shazam!, Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) and written by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman. It is set to premiere on April 25.
