PUBG Netflix Live-Action Series Puts Donald Glover in Charge

Turning PUBG: Battlegrounds into television immediately creates one rather substantial question: what exactly does a PUBG story look like? Krafton and Netflix are about to find out, with a live-action adaptation of the influential battle royale now in development and Donald Glover taking an unusually extensive role both in front of and behind the camera.

Glover will star, write, direct and executive produce the project, according to the announcement of the Netflix adaptation. His brother and frequent collaborator Stephen Glover will also write and serve as an executive producer.

It gives the adaptation a particularly interesting creative lead for a game whose central premise of land, loot, survive provides far less narrative scaffolding than most properties making the jump from games to television.

Donald and Stephen Glover Have Plenty of Room to Build a PUBG Story

Donald and Stephen Glover previously worked together on Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Swarm, but nothing has been revealed about what direction they intend to take with PUBG.

Deadline’s original report confirms that plot details remain under wraps, including the character Glover will play. There is consequently no indication yet whether the series will closely recreate the battle royale structure of the game, build around PUBG’s wider world, or use that familiar fight for survival as the foundation for an original story.

That uncertainty may actually give the Glovers considerable freedom. PUBG: Battlegrounds established itself through emergent player stories rather than a protagonist-led campaign, leaving the adaptation without the same pressure to reproduce a specific narrative beat-for-beat.

For Glover in particular, whose work has moved comfortably between comedy, drama and surreal storytelling, that is a sizeable blank canvas. Exactly what he intends to paint on it remains the bigger mystery.

Krafton Is Going Beyond the Battle Royale

Michael Schaefer will executive produce for NEON TV, alongside Fam Udeorji for Glover’s Gilga and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee from entertainment entity LV3H. LV3H is directly involved in developing and producing the adaptation as Krafton continues trying to expand PUBG beyond the game that popularised its battle royale format.

Those attempts have taken several different forms. On the gaming side, the publisher has experimented extensively with the franchise, even if projects such as PUBG: Black Budget were ultimately cancelled before reaching full release. Moving into scripted entertainment gives Krafton another avenue to grow the IP without needing every new idea to remain attached to the original battle royale structure.

The Netflix project could also face an unusual challenge as a result. PUBG may be instantly recognisable as a game and a concept, but it does not arrive with the established characters and story arcs that adaptations such as The Last of Us could build around.

PUBG Netflix Series Has No Release Window Yet

Krafton and Netflix have not announced a production start date, episode count or release window, while Glover remains the only confirmed cast member.

That leaves almost everything about the adaptation beyond its creative team open for now, but putting Glover in charge of writing, directing and starring suggests Netflix is not simply interested in reproducing a sequence of increasingly smaller circles on screen.

For an IP built around unpredictable stories emerging from 100 people being dropped into the same battleground, giving an equally unpredictable creator room to decide what happens next could be the more interesting way forward.
