The Legend of Zelda Movie Ganondorf Casting Points to a Bigger Cast
Nintendo and Sony Pictures may have found the King of Evil for their live-action The Legend of Zelda film. According to Deadline, Australian actor Uli Latukefu has been cast as Ganondorf, the long-running series antagonist best known as one of Hyrule’s most dangerous recurring threats.
Neither Nintendo nor Sony has issued a formal public casting announcement for Ganondorf at the time of writing, so the news should still be treated as reported rather than fully official. Still, if accurate, this is one of the film’s most important casting moves yet. Link and Zelda may be the faces of the adventure, but Ganondorf is the villain many fans were waiting to see.
Uli Latukefu Reportedly Has a Multi-Picture Deal
Deadline’s report also says Latukefu has signed a multi-picture deal. That detail is interesting because Nintendo and Sony have not announced a sequel, trilogy, or wider film plan for The Legend of Zelda. A multi-picture agreement does not guarantee more films, but it does suggest both companies are keeping their options open if the first adaptation performs well.
That would not be surprising. Nintendo’s move into film has already become a major part of its wider entertainment strategy, and The Legend of Zelda is one of the few franchises with enough world-building, mythology, and fan demand to support more than one film.
Impa and More Cast Members Are Also Reportedly Set
The cast appears to be growing beyond Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. A separate Deadline report says Dichen Lachman will play Impa, one of the series’ most familiar supporting figures. Yvonne Strahovski is reportedly playing a queen character, while the late Sam Neill will also appear in an undisclosed role.
Neill’s involvement could make The Legend of Zelda one of the final screen appearances of his career. His role has not been detailed, so it is too early to say whether he is playing a major Hyrule figure or a smaller supporting part. The officially confirmed leads remain Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda.
Nintendo’s Live-Action Zelda Film Arrives in 2027
Nintendo first announced the live-action The Legend of Zelda film in 2023, with Shigeru Miyamoto producing alongside Avi Arad. Wes Ball, known for The Maze Runner films and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is directing.
The film is scheduled to release worldwide on April 30, 2027, after Nintendo moved it up from its previous May 7, 2027 date. That gives the project less than a year before it reaches cinemas, but Nintendo has still shown very little from the adaptation. Beyond cast details and earlier first-look images of Link and Zelda, there has not been a teaser trailer, full synopsis, or clear confirmation of which game, if any, is serving as the main story foundation.
Fans Are Still Waiting for the First Proper Look
Ganondorf’s reported casting will only increase the pressure on the first trailer. The live-action decision has been debated since the project was announced, especially because The Legend of Zelda is so closely associated with expressive animation, stylised fantasy, and a largely silent hero. Casting can help sell the concept, but the first real footage will matter far more.
For now, the film is slowly becoming clearer. Link and Zelda are confirmed. Ganondorf is reportedly set. Impa and other supporting roles may now be in place. What remains is the biggest question: whether Nintendo and Sony can make Hyrule feel convincing in live action without losing the sense of wonder that made the games endure.
The Legend of Zelda is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on April 30, 2027.
