Gamescom 2025: Pirate Shooter Davy x Jones Brings Quirky Revenge to the Seas

Gamescom 2025 Pirate Shooter Davy x Jones Brings Quirky Revenge to the Seas

Davy x Jones is a New Take on an Old Legend

Legends often twist and evolve depending on who tells them, and few loom larger on the high seas than the story of Davy Jones. PARASIGHT Studio’s latest project, Davy x Jones, takes that infamous name and spins it into something wild, funny, and just a little gruesome.

Rather than focusing on naval battles and buried treasure, this first-person shooter is about betrayal, revenge, and the bizarre partnership between a severed head and its discarded body. Betrayed by your crew and handed to Blackbeard, our hero is strung up, executed, and split in two. From there, the revenge story begins, pairing Jones the body with Davy the head. It’s a setup that lends itself to both comedy and creativity, as Davy’s sarcastic quips bounce off the carnage that follows.

Head, Body, and the Dance of Combat

What makes Davy x Jones stand out isn’t just the pirate flavour but how the split characters shape gameplay. Players must control Jones in traditional FPS fashion — pistol in the right hand, blade in the left — while using Davy to interact with the environment or chomp down on floating health-restoring orbs.

In practice, the combat feels closest to modern DOOM. You’ll need to juggle movement, parries, and offence constantly. The pistol and blade combo creates a rhythm of shooting, slashing, and countering, while light and charged attacks give some flexibility against hordes of enemies. Staying aggressive is key, but reckless play will quickly overwhelm you.

My own experience proved just how punishing the game can be. Rushing in led to multiple quick deaths until I adjusted to timing parries, dodging at the right moment, and picking my battles. Shooting felt slick and satisfying, while melee combat, though slightly looser, added flavour and variety to the overall flow.

A World Beyond the Battlefield

The preview teased more than just frantic fights. Davy x Jones will also eventually feature Abby — a surreal hub area that is a half-ship, half-whale hybrid. Here, players can engage with crew management systems, allocate resources. Additionally, there are opportunities to explore skill trees and gear progression.

These RPG-lite elements suggest depth beyond the shooting arenas, ensuring that combat variety is paired with longer-term player investment.

Early Access With Promise

Set to be available in Early Access, the game already delivers a strong sense of identity. Its mix of dark humour, challenging combat, and pirate folklore is unlike most shooters on the market. The duality of Davy and Jones adds personality, while the DOOM-inspired combat loop offers a demanding but rewarding challenge.

If PARASIGHT can tighten melee responsiveness and flesh out progression systems, Davy x Jones could carve out a unique spot among both indie shooters and pirate-themed games. For now, the foundation is solid, and what’s on the horizon looks promising.

As I stepped away from my session, the appetite for more was undeniable. Legends may shift with every telling, but Davy x Jones feels ready to write a memorable new chapter in pirate lore — one that’s bloody, humorous, and brimming with vengeance.
