Armatus Gameplay Shows Off the Gothic District
Counterplay Games and Fictions have released 10 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay from Armatus, offering a more substantial look at the third-person roguelite before its January 2027 launch.
The extended gameplay video heads into the Gothic District, with lead producer Ryan Belmont providing commentary as the action unfolds. Rather than another tightly edited trailer, the footage is intended to give players a clearer sense of how combat and exploration flow during an actual run.
Armatus takes place in the demon-infested ruins of Paris after humanity has effectively lost control of the world. Players become the supernatural warrior of an ancient order, carving through increasingly hostile parts of the city in search of the Sunless Gate, a lost passage said to lead to heaven.
Armatus Mixes Guns, a Scythe and Celestial Powers
Combat centres on combining a scythe with firearms and supernatural abilities, giving players several ways to deal with the demonic creatures occupying Paris. The roguelite structure means death sends the warrior back to try again, with each run offering another chance to push further while learning enemy behaviour and refining a preferred build.
Weapons range from SMGs to shotguns, while celestial abilities can bring effects such as holy fire or slowing time into the mix. Counterplay also pitches Armatus as a game where players start a run capable of dealing serious damage, rather than slowly waiting for the build to become enjoyable. That power can continue escalating through abilities and passive enhancements as the journey progresses.
It puts the game firmly in the increasingly competitive third-person roguelite space occupied by releases such as Saros, though Armatus leans heavily into dark religious imagery, post-apocalyptic Paris, and a blend of melee and gunplay to establish its own identity.
Launches January 7, 2027
The new footage also gives players another chance to see the project Counterplay has moved onto following Godfall and Duelyst. The developer describes itself as a smaller team focused on skill-driven games, with Armatus becoming its latest attempt to build around repeated mastery rather than a one-and-done combat system.
With release now only a few months away, the uninterrupted Gothic District footage offers the clearest opportunity yet to see whether Counterplay’s mixture of scythes, shotguns and celestial destruction can hold together across repeated runs.
Armatus launches on January 7, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Its Steam listing also currently includes a playable demo.
