Borderlands 4 Release Moved Up, Spark Speculation Over GTA VI

the Release of Borderlands 4 Will Be Moved Up from the Original Schedule.

Take-Two Interactive is certainly having a busy 2025. Not only will Rockstar Games finally release the long-awaited GTA VI, which is expected to become a monumental success from day one, but the publisher will also launch at least two major titles under 2K Games: Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4. And while it’s always good to steer clear of other big games, sometimes, there are other reasons for a new release date, as is what’s happening with Borderlands 4.

Originally slated for release on September 23 across consoles and PC, the looter shooter will now launch more than a week earlier on September 12. This reveal came from a video shared by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford on social media, but it was definitely not the intended message. But with the cat already out of the bag, the team has confirmed that the new date is now official.

“The team has been working very hard and everything is going great actually,” Pitchford said. “In fact, everything is kinda going the best-case-scenario. The game is awesome. The team is cooking. And so, the launch date for Borderlands 4 is changing. We’re moving it forward….Holy, holy, what?! This never happens, you guys, this never happens.”

First announced in 2024, this will be the next mainline entry in the popular shooter franchise. The original late-year window is considered ideal for launching a loot-based shooter RPG like this, giving it a firm push ahead of the holiday season.

However, the latest announcement has understandably stirred up the gaming community, particularly those who are still eagerly awaiting a firm release date for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Many have begun to speculate that the earlier launch of Borderlands 4 might be a strategic move to clear the calendar for GTA VI, suggesting that Rockstar’s juggernaut could arrive sometime close to the same September window. It would also be prudent to see just when Mafia: The Old Country is releasing as well, considering the genre similarities between the two.

Borderlands 4 is now officially set to release on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
