Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access Begins October 21

Infinity Ward and Activision are preparing players for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access, which begins October 21 for those who digitally pre-ordered the game.

The extraction mode returns as one of the major pillars of Modern Warfare 4, following its first proper DMZ showing during the Xbox Games Showcase. This time, deployments take place across the Hajin Exclusion Zone, with players tackling Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and other activities while balancing progression against the risk of losing equipment.

Full access to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, including Multiplayer, begins October 23.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Has Its Own 70-Level Progression Track

DMZ progression will operate separately from the standard Multiplayer climb through Levels 1 to 55. Players instead have 70 DMZ-specific levels to work through, earning new gear, Operator skins, Station upgrades, 3D Printer recipes, Survival Kits and other rewards along the way.

XP earned in DMZ still contributes to the broader Multiplayer progression track, but the relationship works only one way. XP earned through Multiplayer or Call of Duty: Warzone will not advance DMZ levels.

Activision has also published a detailed Modern Warfare 4 progression and Prestige guide, which confirms 10 Prestige levels followed by 1,000 Prestige Master levels.

For the first time in the series, players can choose between Classic and Regular Prestige. Classic resets level unlocks and Create-a-Class progression for extra rewards and a 20% XP boost, while Regular Prestige lets players restart at Level 1 without losing unlocked gear.

Apex Attachments Add Another Layer to Gunsmith

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 33 Operators and 33 weapons, with both Multiplayer and DMZ drawing from the same broader arsenal. The biggest addition to Gunsmith is Apex Attachments. Each weapon has a unique Apex Attachment that can alter its capabilities without taking up a regular attachment slot.

Gunny also joins the customisation suite as an attachment optimiser, automatically building suggested weapon configurations from equipment a player has already unlocked. Players can request builds suited to close-range, balanced or long-range combat without manually working through every attachment combination.

Those Operators will also arrive alongside Infinity Ward’s previously stated push for more grounded cosmetics in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, although collaborations will remain part of the game’s post-launch plans.

Campaign Early Access Is Already Live

Players waiting for DMZ can already play the full 16-mission campaign through Campaign Early Access. The story spans the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai, following Private Park Hyun Jun alongside a returning John Price.

Campaign completion rewards, including Base Operators and Double XP Tokens, will carry across into Multiplayer and DMZ once those modes become available.

DMZ Early Access begins October 21 at 1 AM SGT for eligible digital pre-orders, before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
