Fortnite Override Puts Gaming Icons at the Centre of Its Next Season

Epic Games has spent years turning Fortnite into one of gaming’s biggest crossover hubs, bringing together characters from movies, television, comics, music and plenty of video games along the way. Its next season appears ready to lean much more heavily into gaming itself.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, titled Override, launches on August 20 after the current Runners season comes to an end. Sonic the Hedgehog is already among the major gaming collaborations being teased for the new season, while leaks and promotional clues have pointed towards an even broader collection of familiar faces.

Sonic Leads The Latest Gaming Takeover

Sonic has been one of the clearest confirmed additions so far, with Epic and SEGA beginning to tease his arrival ahead of Override. The wider season has also been linked to Persona 5, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Pac-Man, Kingdom Hearts and several other major gaming properties. Recent promotional material and leaks have suggested characters including Joker and Sora could be involved, although Epic has yet to formally detail every crossover expected during the season.

That distinction is worth keeping in mind, particularly given how Fortnite collaborations often roll out gradually rather than arriving simultaneously with a new season. Still, the direction is already clear. Instead of building the season around a single external franchise, Epic appears to be turning it into a broader celebration of video games.

Plenty of Gaming History to Draw From

Video game collaborations are hardly new territory for Fortnite. Master Chief, Kratos, Lara Croft, Geralt of Rivia and characters from Street Fighter are just some of the gaming names that have previously crossed into the battle royale.

The new season appears to take that concept further by making gaming culture itself one of the season’s defining themes. That creates plenty of room for additional characters to arrive after launch, particularly if Epic follows its usual approach of introducing new collaborations throughout a season.

The inclusion of properties associated with SEGA, Capcom, Square Enix and other major publishers would also make Override one of the broadest collections of gaming franchises Fortnite has assembled in a single season.

Fortnite Override Launches August 20

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override launches on August 20 across the game’s supported platforms, immediately following the end of Chapter 7 Season 3: Runners. Epic has yet to fully reveal every collaboration, cosmetic and gameplay addition that will arrive with the new season.

Considering the number of gaming franchises already being teased or linked to Override, however, the biggest surprise may ultimately be which familiar faces do not make the cut.
