Game Science is not rushing to bring generative AI into Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Following the huge success of Black Myth: Wukong, attention has naturally turned to the studio’s next project. That next game is Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new action RPG inspired by the legendary demon-subduing figure from Chinese folklore.

However, with details still scarce and the project still early in development, players have started asking a different question: will Game Science use generative AI to speed things up?

According to Game Science co-founder and Black Myth series art director Yang Qi, the answer is no, at least for now.

Yang Qi Says Design and Assets Will Stay Away From AIGC

Yang Qi addressed the topic on Weibo after a player asked how much current AI technology could accelerate development on Black Myth: Zhong Kui. As reported by GamerSky, Yang said the game’s design and asset stages would “stay away from AIGC”. He added that this was not because he was rejecting AI outright, but because the team did not feel the need to rush into it.

Yang’s comments do not read like a blanket anti-AI statement. Instead, they suggest Game Science is taking a more cautious position, especially around the parts of development most visibly tied to artistic direction.

For a studio that built much of Black Myth: Wukong’s identity on painstaking visual craft, cultural detail, and creature design, that stance is likely to reassure players who worry about generative AI flattening or cheapening creative work.

Game Science Is Choosing Slower Craft Over Speed

Yang’s reply also pushed back against the idea that AI should automatically be used simply because it can speed up production. He reportedly referenced Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey, praising the director’s continued use of older filmmaking methods at a time when digital tools and post-production techniques are more dominant than ever.

The comparison is not about games and film being identical. It is about creative intent. Game Science appears to be saying that new technology only matters if it serves the work. If it does not meaningfully improve the design, art, tone, or production process, there is no need to force it into the pipeline just because the industry is talking about it.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui Is Still Early in Development

There is also a practical reason not to overread the comment. Black Myth: Zhong Kui remains a long way from release. Game Science revealed the project in 2025 as the second entry in the Black Myth series, but the studio has not announced a launch window. At reveal, the project was still early enough that Game Science did not show in-game footage.

The studio later released a Lunar New Year short tied to the game, but that was more about mood, symbolism, and thematic direction than concrete gameplay information.

That means Yang’s statement should be understood as Game Science’s current approach, not necessarily a permanent policy covering every possible tool the studio may ever use.

A Reassuring Message for Players

Even so, the timing is important. Generative AI has become one of the most sensitive subjects in game development, especially when it touches art, writing, concept design, voices, or asset production. Many players are wary of studios using AI-generated material as a shortcut rather than investing in artists, animators, writers, and designers.

For Black Myth: Zhong Kui, that concern was always going to be sharper. The Black Myth series is strongly associated with mythological interpretation, cultural texture, and high-end visual presentation. A careless use of generative AI could risk undermining exactly what made Game Science stand out.

For now, the message is simple. Black Myth: Zhong Kui is not being fast-tracked through AI-generated design or asset work. Game Science is taking its time, and Yang Qi seems perfectly comfortable with that.
