Hordeguard: Winds of the North Blends Viking Action With Tower Defence

Daedalic Entertainment and Null Pointer Games have announced Hordeguard: Winds of the North, a 3D action tower defence game built around defending a Viking settlement against increasingly dangerous waves of enemies.

The game combines real-time combat, exploration, RPG progression and base building, with players gathering resources between attacks before rushing back to strengthen their village. The catch is that every trip away from safety eats into the time remaining before the next assault begins.

That creates a constant trade-off between exploration and preparation. Venturing further can mean bringing back better resources, but it also leaves less time to reinforce walls, upgrade defences, and prepare for whatever comes next.

Every Resource Run Comes With a Risk

At the heart of Hordeguard: Winds of the North is a repeating cycle of exploration, settlement building and survival. Players can expand their village, construct stronger fortifications, and recruit a warband while dealing with enemies inspired by Norse mythology.

Experience earned along the way can also be spent on upgrade cards that strengthen combat abilities and defensive options. Different specialisations will let players lean more heavily into particular roles, whether that means becoming a stronger frontline warrior, focusing on construction, or building a tougher defensive setup around the settlement.

The escalating enemy waves mean those choices will matter more over time, especially when resources become harder to gather safely.

Local Co-Op Lets Two Vikings Split the Work

The game can be played solo, but local co-op will also allow two players to tackle the survival loop together. That opens up the option to divide responsibilities, with one player potentially handling exploration and resource gathering while the other focuses on fortifications or clearing enemies closer to home.

Both players can also fight alongside each other when the settlement comes under attack. Given how much Hordeguard: Winds of the North revolves around balancing limited preparation time, co-op could significantly change how aggressively players can explore before each wave arrives.

More Hordeguard Gameplay Is Coming August 13

Daedalic is planning to show more of Hordeguard: Winds of the North during the Daedalic Showcase on August 13, with a new look at the game expected during the presentation. A release date has not yet been announced, although the game is already available to wishlist on Steam.

For now, the combination of direct melee combat, settlement management, and time-pressured exploration gives Hordeguard: Winds of the North a different spin on the familiar tower defence loop, especially for players who prefer getting their hands dirty when the walls start falling.
