007 First Light Goes Gold Ahead of May 27 Release
IO Interactive has confirmed 007 First Light has gone gold, as the game’s core development is complete ahead of its planned May 27 release. For a project first teased nearly five years ago as Project 007, this is the clearest milestone that the launch date is stable, barring any unexpected certification issues.
In practical terms, that means fans need only wait just a few more weeks before diving into the world of espionage and clandestine operations, becoming the super spy they always wanted to be.
Pre-Orders Get a Free Deluxe Edition Upgrade
Alongside the announcement, IO Interactive says pre-orders for 007 First Light will receive a free upgrade to the Deluxe Edition. The bundle is positioned as a cosmetic-heavy incentive, including alternate outfits for Bond and additional customisation content.
This is a familiar pre-launch tactic, and by leaning on cosmetics rather than gameplay advantages, IO Interactive is avoiding the balance and access controversies that often follow “pay to get ahead” incentives. It is effectively an early-buyer perk without changing the baseline experience.
A Bond Origin Story With IO’s Mission Philosophy
007 First Light is an origin story that follows a younger Bond before he becomes the fully formed Agent 007. The marketing has leaned into cinematic tone and set-piece spectacle, but IO Interactive has repeatedly signalled that it is not abandoning the studio’s core mission design principles.
The promise is flexibility. Rather than funnelling players through fixed corridors of combat, the game is expected to support multiple approaches, with gadgets, stealth options, and improvisation playing a major role. If that lands, 007 First Light should feel closer to a spy sandbox than a conventional third-person shooter, even when the story shifts into higher-intensity sequences.
That balance is the real creative challenge. Bond is a cinematic fantasy, but IO’s strengths lie in its systems and replayable scenarios. Going gold suggests the studio is confident it has found a workable middle ground.
007 First Light launches May 27 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is confirmed, with release timing still unannounced.
