Kill As You Please As Ghost of Yotei Goes Non-linear with Largest Open World Map

Hype and anticipation are at an all-time high as Sucker Punch Productions continues its marketing efforts for its new open-world action game, Ghost of Yotei. The latest information comes from an exclusive interview with Famitsu, where creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Cornell provided further details about what players can expect.

We already know that the core story revolves around Atsu and her quest for revenge against the Yotei Six. And that bloody journey will unfold in the region known today as Hokkaido.

Just like they did with Ghost of Tsushima, Fox and Cornell emphasised that Ghost of Yotei underwent a comprehensive research process to ensure authenticity. They promised that the game would faithfully represent the Ainu culture of the era, an indigenous people of Japan

“We have received cooperation from various advisors regarding the depiction of the Ainu people and Ainu culture of the time,” explained Fox. “Like with the previous game, we have also thoroughly researched Japanese culture and incorporated it into this project.”

“I also went to Hokkaido to research Ainu culture, and had people knowledgeable about Ainu culture introduce me to museums and folk crafts, which I incorporated into the worldview of this work. By the way, I also went to the mountains with them and had the experience of picking wild vegetables,” added Cornell.

Non-Linearity in Ghost of Yotei

Another exciting revelation from the interview concerns the game’s structure. The hunt for the Yotei Six will be non-linear. Rather than following a strictly developer-driven narrative path, players will have the freedom to choose which target to pursue and in what order.

This design decision aims to provide a more liberating gameplay experience, giving players a genuine sense of agency. The way you dish out punishment is also going to get new additions, with Ghost of Yotei adding new weaponry to mix things up.

Moreover, Sucker Punch confirmed that Ghost of Yotei will boast the largest open-world map the studio has ever created. The world promises to be vast, rich in culture, and teeming with life, providing players with an immersive environment to explore at their own pace.

Ghost of Yotei is scheduled to launch on October 2, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
