Begin Atsu's Revenge in Ghost of Yotei This October

The year 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting one for fans of games set in feudal Japan. Following the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Shadows from Ubisoft, Sucker Punch Productions is stepping back into the spotlight with its own new entry into the genre: Ghost of Yotei. After months of mystery and speculation, eager fans can finally mark their calendars: Ghost of Yotei is officially slated for release on October 2.

Sony and Sucker Punch made the announcement shortly after the game was spotted on Taiwan’s game rating board, where it received an R rating (18+). The confirmation came via a new trailer, which sheds light on the narrative’s central conflict.

The trailer introduces a group of six fugitives known as the Yotei Six, who are responsible for the murder of the main character Atsu’s family. Having left her for dead, they are now the target of Atsu’s ire and wrath. These enemies are individually named as The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and their enigmatic leader, Lord Saito.

More than just a story of revenge, Sucker Punch promises that Ghost of Yotei will offer a deeper, more meaningful narrative journey. According to the official PlayStation Blog, Atsu’s path through the region of Ezo will gradually reveal a larger purpose beyond vengeance. This evolution will be reflected in both the story and gameplay mechanics.

“But we’ve only scratched the surface. In Ghost of Yotei, we’ve built upon and evolved the way you explore the open world, offering even more freedom and variety than in Ghost of Tsushima. You’ll choose which leads to follow as you pick which Yōtei Six member you want to hunt down first,” explained Andrew Goldfarb, senior communications manager at Sucker Punch.

“Atsu can also track other dangerous targets and claim bounties, or seek out weapon sensei to learn new skills. Ezo is wild, and as deadly as it is beautiful. As you trek across the open world you’ll find unexpected dangers and peaceful reprieves (including some returning activities from Tsushima), and you’ll be able to build a campfire anywhere in the open world for a rest under the stars. We want you to have the freedom to explore Ezo however you decide to, and we can’t wait to share more.”

The trailer also provides a brief glimpse of the game’s dynamic combat system and the diverse range of weapons available to Atsu. With intense action, a compelling revenge narrative, and a promise of personal discovery, Ghost of Yotei looks poised to deliver a powerful new experience for fans of historical action-adventure titles.

Ghost of Yotei will release on the PlayStation 5 on October 2.
