Mass Effect: Universe Trailer Leak Shows BioWare’s Cancelled RPG

Only days after BioWare confirmed its closure and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect, a genuine internal trailer has surfaced, offering the clearest glimpse yet at what the studio was building.

The footage appeared on Reddit through a burner account after another user claimed that a trailer for the project had already been produced before EA shut BioWare down and ended development on the next Mass Effect.

Running just over two minutes, the leaked video is titled Mass Effect: Universe and opens with a disclaimer identifying it as in-engine footage created by a small team using pre-production assets.

Mass Effect: Universe Introduces a New Protagonist and Brings Back Liara

The leaked Mass Effect trailer surfaced in the series’ Reddit community, introducing what appears to be BioWare’s intended new protagonist. A former soldier, the unnamed human character has moved on from military service and now describes his work as stopping problems before they escalate.

His conversation with an Asari in a crowded bar forms the backbone of the trailer, intercut with glimpses of firefights, biotic abilities, familiar alien species, and space travel. Plenty of recognisable Mass Effect touches appear throughout, including a Krogan, a Mass Relay, a shipboard galaxy map, and a brief romantic encounter. However, these sequences seem to establish the tone and intended scope rather than confirm individual gameplay systems.

The biggest connection to the original trilogy arrives toward the end, when Liara T’Soni removes her hood and joins the confrontation, confirming that at least one major returning character would play a role in BioWare’s planned story.

Confirmation of Real Trailer

Questions naturally surrounded the footage when it first appeared, especially given how easy it has become to produce convincing fake material. Bloomberg has since confirmed the leaked trailer is genuine, describing it as material from the Mass Effect game BioWare was developing before the studio closed.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Mass Effect: Universe was the project’s final title, or that every idea shown would have survived production. BioWare described the game as still in early development when it announced its cancellation.

The footage does offer a rare look at the direction the team was exploring: a return to the Milky Way, a new lead, and a reconnection to Liara and the wider legacy of the original trilogy. After more than five years of teasers and speculation, it may now be the closest players have ever come to seeing the Mass Effect BioWare planned to make.
