Hideo Kojima Wants OD to Remain a Mystery

If you are waiting for Hideo Kojima to start dropping increasingly elaborate trailers for OD, you may be waiting for quite some time. The Kojima Productions horror project has remained deliberately difficult to decipher since its reveal at The Game Awards 2023, with its teasers offering plenty of atmosphere and unsettling facial performances but very little explanation of how the game actually works.

According to Kojima, that lack of information is not a sign that development has stalled, instead, it is exactly how he wants the game to be revealed. Speaking during the latest episode of his KOJI10 programme, Kojima explained that he wants to keep quiet about the project and preserve its mystery through to release.

That is notably different from his usual approach. Kojima acknowledged that he would ordinarily release teaser after teaser for one of his games, but does not want to reveal as much this time around.

Still Actively in Development

Kojima also offered some reassurance for anyone interpreting the silence as trouble behind the scenes. OD remains in active development, with its production schedule having previously been disrupted by the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming has since resumed, while recording and post-production work, including ADR, is expected to continue into 2027.

That also means there is still plenty happening behind the scenes even if Kojima Productions has little intention of showing it publicly. We have previously heard Kojima describe OD as something designed to test the limits of players’ fear, while he has also teased a game system unlike anything he has previously created. Exactly what that means remains the big question.

Don’t Expect an OD Gameplay Breakdown Anytime Soon

Since its original reveal, the game has received only limited glimpses of its cast, environments and wider horror concept. Even its more recent footage has stopped well short of providing a conventional gameplay demonstration.

Judging by Kojima’s latest comments, that may remain the case for much of its development. There is still no release date or launch window, which is being developed by Kojima Productions in partnership with Xbox.

For a creator who has spent years encouraging players to dissect trailers frame by frame, keeping almost everything about OD hidden may be one of Kojima’s stranger promotional decisions. Then again, with a horror game built around the unknown, knowing less might be exactly what he wants.
