Rockstar has issued a statement apologising for the delay, acknowledging that the new timeline is significantly later than fans had anticipated. According to the developer, the extra time is necessary to ensure the game not only meets but exceeds expectations.

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game,” said the statement.

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

The announcement has understandably sparked a wave of disappointment across the gaming community, many of whom have eagerly awaited any substantial update on GTA VI. As for other games that are coming out in 2025, such as Borderlands 4, the teams behind them can now breathe a sigh of relief.

As for fans, you will have to hold on a little longer, with May 2026 now marked as the new countdown target for one of the most anticipated games of the decade.
