Shadow of the Road Story Trailer Shows a Country at War

Owlcat Games and Another Angle Games have released a new story overview trailer for Shadow of the Road, the upcoming tactical RPG set in an alternate version of 19th-century Japan.

The trailer debuted during Telltale Games’ Choices Matter Festival and gives a closer look at how the game’s version of the Boshin War shapes its characters, factions, and wider world. Shadow of the Road is still planned to launch later this year, though an exact release date has not yet been announced.

Ronin, Exile, and the Fall of a Master

The new Shadow of the Road trailer opens at the height of conflict, showing Japan split between the traditional power of the Shōgun and the modernising force of the Emperor.

At the centre of the story are Satoru and Akira, 2 disciples whose lives are thrown into chaos after the fall of their master, Mochitsugu. Forced into exile and carrying the weight of that loss, the pair become part of a much larger struggle that could reshape the country.

Rather than presenting war as a simple spectacle, the trailer leans into consequence. These characters are not only fighting to survive, they are also trying to decide what kind of future is still worth chasing.

Shadow of the Road takes place during an alternative Bakumatsu Period, where history, mythology, and technology collide. The war between Shōgun and Emperor is complicated by the East Nippon Company, which has strengthened the Emperor’s forces with advanced mechs. That creates a sharp contrast between samurai tradition and industrialised warfare, with ancient temples standing alongside steam-powered machines.

The world is not only shaped by human factions either. Kami and yōkai also exist in this version of Japan, and the trailer suggests these supernatural forces will have their own goals beyond the political conflict.

Choices Will Shape the Party

As a story-driven tactical RPG, Shadow of the Road is built around player decisions as much as battlefield positioning. Players will join a mission led by Tokugawa’s spymaster, who recruits Satoru and Akira to protect a boy with immense, unstable powers. Along the way, more companions will join the group, each with their own history, motivation, and fears.

Those relationships will not simply sit in the background. Owlcat says player choices can form new bonds, break long-standing friendships, or repair damaged family ties, affecting how characters grow throughout the journey.

Tactical Combat With Character Stakes

Combat will use turn-based tactical systems, with each party member bringing different abilities to the battlefield. The key difference is that personal goals and relationships can also influence encounters, meaning team dynamics may matter both inside and outside combat. Players will need to manage strategy, positioning, and party development while navigating a story where loyalty is rarely simple.

For RPG fans, that combination gives Shadow of the Road a strong pitch: samurai tactics, alternate history, steampunk machinery, folklore, and choice-driven character drama.

Shadow of the Road launches later this year for PC, with the release date still to be announced.
