Gamers who grew up with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion have every reason to celebrate as 2025 promises to be a big year. Initially, all eyes were on Skyblivion, a fan-made project aimed at recreating Oblivion using Skyrim’s more modern engine, which had been slated for release this year. However, with the likely reveal of the official Oblivion remaster project by Virtuos and Bethesda, it means the Skyblivion is now in an awkward situation.
An official remaster raises questions about the fate the fan-made project, with many fans wondering just how this would continue in the light of official content, or would there be any legal or developmental hurdles due to the newly confirmed official version.
Fortunately, Skyblivion’s lead developer, Rebelzize, stepped in to ease concerns. Through his official Twitter/X account, he made it clear that the existence of the official remaster changes nothing for their project. According to Rebelzize, Skyblivion will continue to move forward and is expected to be completed as planned.
He even emphasised that the remaster is actually a win for fans, as they will get to enjoy two distinct versions of Oblivion in the same year. Rebelzize also expressed open support for Virtuos’ official remaster, highlighting the unique value each version offers to fans of the beloved classic.
Despite the fan project being built using Skyrim’s engine, which is now over a decade old, Skyblivion continues to garner significant attention for its ambitious scale and community-driven passion. It will be distributed for free upon release, although no specific date has been set.
As of the time this article is written, neither Microsoft nor Bethesda, the rights holders to the official remaster, have issued any statement regarding Skyblivion, nor have they indicated whether they plan to intervene in any way. In fact, not even the leaks have led to an official confirmation of the remaster. In any case, it appears likely that the official remaster will launch first, given that Skyblivion is still deep in development.
