Spyro: A Realm Beyond Finally Brings the Purple Dragon Back
For players who grew up during the classic PlayStation era, Spyro remains one of gaming’s most recognisable platforming mascots. Alongside Crash Bandicoot, the purple dragon helped define a generation of colourful 3D platformers built around exploration, collectibles, expressive worlds, and charming characters.
Despite that legacy, Spyro has spent years away from the spotlight, with Spyro Reignited Trilogy serving as the major modern reminder of what made the original games work. That is no longer the case.
Activision and Toys for Bob have officially revealed Spyro: A Realm Beyond, a brand new adventure scheduled for Spring 2027.
Toys for Bob Returns to Spyro
The announcement arrived during Xbox Games Showcase, where Spyro: A Realm Beyond debuted with a cinematic trailer and an early look at the new direction for the series.
Development is being handled by Toys for Bob, the studio behind Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The studio has already proved it understood Spyro’s visual identity, tone, and movement-based appeal when it rebuilt the original trilogy for modern platforms, and is now set to take it forward.
Spyro has also received a modern redesign, with Toys for Bob aiming to keep him familiar while giving him the physical presence needed for a more ambitious adventure. Tom Kenny is returning to voice the character.
Spyro Can Finally Fly Freely
The biggest change in Spyro: A Realm Beyond is true dragon flight. Previous mainline Spyro games largely limited flight to gliding, special challenge stages, or specific sequences. This time, flight is part of Spyro’s core ability set.
Players will be able to take to the skies, dive, climb, weave through environments, and use flight as a major part of exploration. Toys for Bob is building the world around that freedom, which makes this feel like more than a nostalgic return.
That shift could meaningfully change how Spyro plays. Instead of moving through connected platforming spaces mostly on foot, Spyro: A Realm Beyond appears designed around vertical discovery, aerial movement, and a stronger sense of dragon fantasy.
A New Realm and a New Threat Await
Spyro: A Realm Beyond sends Spyro into a strange new world, where his search for a way home is interrupted by the arrival of an invading force known as the Scavs.
The game will also introduce a new antagonist, one that Toys for Bob says will challenge Spyro’s abilities and push him emotionally as a hero. That suggests the new adventure may give Spyro a slightly more developed character journey while keeping the series’ bright, whimsical foundation intact.
For longtime fans, the key promise is discovery. Toys for Bob is keeping the series’ focus on colourful spaces, quirky characters, treasures, and exploration, but expanding that formula around full flight.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond launches in spring 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will also be included with Game Pass, support cloud play, and feature Xbox Play Anywhere.
