Obsidian Xbox Restructuring Fears Have Been Directly Countered
The latest wave of reports on Xbox restructuring has left players watching closely to see which studios may be affected next. Over the past few days, multiple reports have suggested that Microsoft is preparing major cuts across its gaming division, with possible layoffs, project cancellations, studio closures, or spin-offs being discussed.
That uncertainty has created a rumour-heavy environment where almost every major Xbox-owned studio has become part of the conversation. One of the biggest names dragged into that speculation was Obsidian Entertainment, the RPG studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, The Outer Worlds, and Avowed.
For many fans, the idea of Obsidian being at risk was especially alarming given its reputation as one of Xbox’s strongest role-playing teams.
Obsidian Is Supposedly Not at Risk
Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has now pushed back against those rumours. Writing on Bluesky, Schreier said Obsidian is not in negotiations to avoid shutting down. He added that while many details around the wider Xbox layoffs are still unclear, people familiar with the situation say Xbox is keeping the studio.
That does not mean the wider restructuring is overblown. Reports around Microsoft’s gaming division still point to significant changes. However, Obsidian does not appear to be one of the studios currently in danger.
Remains One of Xbox’s Strongest RPG Assets
That would make sense from a portfolio perspective. Obsidian gives Xbox something it badly needs: a recognised RPG studio with deep genre credibility and multiple active franchises.
The studio’s reputation was built on choice-driven writing, branching quest design, and reactive worldbuilding. Even outside Fallout: New Vegas, the studio has remained closely associated with the kind of role-playing experiences that core Xbox fans still want from Microsoft’s first-party lineup.
That value has only grown as Xbox continues trying to define what its studio system should look like after years of acquisitions, shifting Game Pass priorities, multiplatform releases, and inconsistent first-party momentum.
Xbox’s Wider Restructuring Still Looks Serious
Obsidian’s reported safety does not remove the broader concern around Xbox. The current reports suggest Microsoft is preparing one of its most significant gaming restructures in years. Studios including Arkane, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs have been mentioned in various reports around possible closures, spinoffs, or sale discussions, though Microsoft has not publicly confirmed final decisions for each studio.
That is why caution still matters. Until Microsoft officially announces the full scope of the restructuring, much of the situation remains fluid.
