Sony Brings Infinity Nikki Smells to Life with Grid Scent Tech in Japan

What makes video games more immersive? Is it the storytelling? The visual design? That answer depends on the individual, but there has been progress made to bridge the gap between perspective and reality, with Sony attempting to bring in fragrance as part of a collaboration with the hit dress-up game, Infinity Nikki, in Japan.

As part of the efforts to spice up their various stores in Japan, Sony has announced the collaboration with the game that will run until early February, with fans urged to visit stores located in Ginza, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka.

Not only will you be checking out various Infinity Nikki-inspired decorations, it will also be the prime location to check out Sony’s prototype technology—the Grid Scent. This technology will deliver fragrances that are reminiscent of what players see in the game and increase the immersion to a whole new level. Together with its array of beautiful costumes, visitors to Miraland can take in scents that include floral and forest-themed fragrances.

Unfortunately, this technology is currently only being used for specific videos that are showing off Infinity Nikki, but for those hoping for scents to surround you as you explore the in-game world, that is still not possible at this juncture. Of course, never say never, but until Sony decides to release the Grid Scent as a commercial product and technology, we are all stuck still sniffing reality.

Infinity Nikki is a free-to-play action-adventure title with dress-up elements that is developed by Papergames. It is the fifth instalment in the Nikki series and a sequel to Shining Nikki, with open-world exploration, platforming, puzzle-solving, and gacha mechanics being the main draws.
