Microsoft and ASUS Join Forces in the Handheld Market
With handheld gaming surging in popularity, Microsoft is officially stepping into the market through a collaboration with ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG). Instead of developing a new device entirely in-house, the company is partnering with ASUS to release a dedicated handheld line under the ROG Xbox Ally moniker.
During Gamescom 2025, Microsoft confirmed that both the ROG Xbox Ally and its premium model, the ROG Xbox Ally X, will launch globally on October 16. This news follows months of speculation and validates earlier industry rumors about an October release window.
Pricing and Regional Availability
Pricing for both models has not yet been revealed. According to a statement shared with IGN, Microsoft and ASUS are monitoring economic conditions before finalizing retail prices. This cautious approach suggests pricing may be announced closer to launch.
As with other console releases, availability will roll out by region. At launch, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines will be among the first Southeast Asian countries to receive the ROG Xbox Ally. However, Indonesia and Thailand, while confirmed as distribution regions, will need to wait for further updates on release dates.
Handheld Compatibility Program
To improve the gaming experience on the handheld, Microsoft also introduced the Handheld Compatibility Program, a system designed to help players quickly identify how well games will run on the ROG Xbox Ally. Titles will be labeled as:
- “Handheld Optimized” – tuned to run seamlessly on the device.
- “Mostly Compatible” – requiring only minor in-game setting adjustments.
This initiative mirrors approaches seen on other handheld platforms like the Steam Deck, giving gamers more confidence when expanding their digital libraries.
What’s Next for the ROG Xbox Ally?
While the release date is now confirmed, Microsoft has yet to share pricing information, leaving fans eager for the final details. With competition heating up from the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch, the ROG Xbox Ally’s performance, pricing, and software support will determine how well it carves out its place in the handheld gaming space.
