Bowser Retires as President of Nintendo of America
Leadership Transition Confirmed
Nintendo of America has announced that Doug Bowser has retired after serving as President and COO for six years. His tenure saw him represent the company during Direct showcases, global events, and major corporate decisions, while being the most appropriately named executive.
He will be succeeded by Devon Pritchard, a 19-year veteran who previously served as Executive Vice President of Revenue, Marketing, and Experience. Pritchard also sits on the company’s Board of Directors, giving her long-standing influence on the company’s North America strategy.
The Japanese gaming giant further confirmed that Satoru Shibata, former President in Europe and current Managing Executive Officer in Japan, will serve as CEO for North America while continuing his executive duties in Japan.
Bowser’s Farewell
Bowser’s appointment in 2019 drew attention thanks to the shared name with Mario’s long-time nemesis, a coincidence that became a running joke in gaming culture. In his farewell, Bowser reflected on his pride in the company’s accomplishments and expressed confidence in Pritchard’s ability to lead the American branch into its next chapter.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa also extended thanks, praising Bowser for his years of service and steady leadership during a pivotal era for the company.
Looking Ahead
With Bowser’s retirement and the installation of new leadership, this begins a new era. Pritchard’s promotion and Shibata’s expanded responsibilities signal continuity at the executive level, as the company prepares for its next generation of hardware and games.
