Lara Croft Returns in a Dual Reveal With Remake and New Sequel
A Surprise Double Announcement on the The Game Awards 2025 Stage
After successfully reintroducing Lara Croft through its origin-story trilogy, Crystal Dynamics has firmly established itself as the steward of Tomb Raider’s modern identity.
While the studio had previously confirmed that a new Unreal Engine 5-powered entry was in development, few expected what followed at The Game Awards 2025. In a surprise showcase, Crystal Dynamics revealed not one, but two new Tomb Raider projects, signalling a major new phase for the franchise.
The announcement follows weeks of leaked posters and teaser material circulating online. Crystal Dynamics used the global stage to confirm the rumours, officially unveiling Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, set for 2026, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, arriving in 2027.
Legacy of Atlantis Reimagines the Original Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is positioned as a complete modern remake of the original Tomb Raider. Built entirely in Unreal Engine 5, the project goes beyond visual upgrades, aiming to redesign gameplay systems to meet contemporary action-adventure expectations.
This includes updated traversal, combat and environmental interaction while preserving the spirit of Lara Croft’s earliest expedition.
To deliver this reimagining, Crystal Dynamics is collaborating with Flying Wild Hog, the studio behind Shadow Warrior. Legacy of Atlantis is planned for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, bringing Lara’s first adventure to modern platforms with current-generation production values.
Catalyst Continues Lara Croft’s Modern Storyline
While Legacy of Atlantis revisits Lara’s origins, Tomb Raider: Catalyst serves as the next major chapter in her modern narrative. Set in Northern India, the sequel depicts a vast and dangerous region steeped in ancient mythology and hidden threats. Crystal Dynamics describes Catalyst as the largest world the studio has ever created for the series.
Also developed in Unreal Engine 5, Catalyst aims to push scale, exploration and cinematic storytelling further than previous entries. Like the remake, it is currently planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Both projects will feature Alix Wilton Regan as the voice of Lara Croft, continuing her role from the modern trilogy. With a remake and a full sequel arriving in consecutive years, Crystal Dynamics appears ready to define the heroine’s next era with ambition and breadth.
