God of War Laufey Takes Sony Santa Monica’s Epic Series In A Bold New Direction

After God of War Ragnarök brought Kratos’ Norse saga to a powerful close, many fans expected Sony Santa Monica to move in one of two obvious directions. The studio could continue Atreus’ journey, or send Kratos into another mythology for the next stage of his story.

Instead, God of War Laufey is taking the series somewhere more unexpected. Revealed during Sony’s latest State of Play, the next mainline God of War game shifts the focus to Faye, also known as Laufey, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother.

It is a major narrative swing for one of PlayStation’s most important franchises. Faye has always shaped the modern God of War story from the background, but God of War Laufey brings her into the foreground as a playable protagonist with her own journey, combat style, and place in the series’ wider mythological future.

The Everywhen Opens God Of War To More Mythologies

God of War Laufey begins after Faye’s funeral, following the opening moments of God of War from 2018. Death should have been the end, but Faye awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife of the gods where beings from different mythologies coexist in a dangerous realm.

That setup gives Sony Santa Monica a natural way to expand the series beyond the Nine Realms without immediately repeating Kratos’ familiar path. The Everywhen is described as a place tied to the origin and endpoint of magic, making it both a prison and a mystery Faye must understand if she hopes to return to Kratos and Atreus.

The reveal already showed Faye crossing paths with Sekhmet from Egyptian mythology and Begtse from Mongolian and Tibetan tradition. Both encounters suggest God of War Laufey will use the Everywhen to bring different divine cultures into conflict while still keeping the franchise centred on personal stakes.

Faye Brings A Faster And More Magical Combat Style

The biggest gameplay difference is Faye herself. Sony Santa Monica is not simply placing a new character into Kratos’ existing moveset. God of War Laufey is being built around a more fluid, agile, and magic-driven approach.

Faye can move between ground and air more freely, giving combat a faster tempo than the heavier close-range style of the Norse games. The reveal also placed greater emphasis on momentum, mobility, and magical abilities, while preserving the intimate combat feel associated with the modern entries.

Sony Santa Monica says it is drawing from the movement of the Greek era while keeping the worldbuilding and character focus of the Norse saga. If it lands, God of War Laufey could feel familiar without becoming a simple continuation of Kratos’ combat identity.

Phranque And Rue Join Faye’s Journey

Faye will not travel through the Everywhen alone. Shortly after awakening, she meets Phranque, a cosmic cube described as earnest and protective, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian bound to a powerful sword.

Their presence suggests God of War Laufey will maintain the companion-driven storytelling that helped define the recent games. Kratos had Atreus and Mimir. Faye now has her own unusual party, and their relationships may become central to the game’s exploration of the Everywhen.

The sword itself also appears to be a major part of Faye’s combat. As its previous guardian, Rue is tied to one of the game’s key weapons, while Faye’s own Jötnar magic gives her abilities that can manipulate souls and open new combo routes during battle.

God Of War Laufey Is The Next Big Thing on PlayStation 5

God of War Laufey is currently in development for PlayStation 5, but Sony Santa Monica has not announced a release window yet. The game is already available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store.

Even without a date, the reveal gives PlayStation a major new first-party statement. This new game is not just continuing the franchise, it is testing how far the series can move beyond Kratos while still feeling unmistakably like God of War.

For longtime fans, that makes this one of Sony Santa Monica’s most fascinating creative risks yet. Faye is no longer just the memory that started a journey, she is now leading one.
