Metro 2039 Returns to the Tunnels Beneath Moscow
4A Games and Deep Silver have revealed the first gameplay trailer for Metro 2039, confirming a February 2027 launch window for the next entry in the long-running post-apocalyptic shooter series.
Shown during Xbox Games Showcase, the new trailer features nearly three minutes of in-game footage, offering a first proper look at the game’s claustrophobic tunnel combat, surface exploration, stealth systems, and survival-focused world design. Metro 2039 is set to launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
Hunter Emerges as Metro 2039’s New Threat
The new trailer introduces Hunter, a fanatical leader who has taken control of the Metro through propaganda and fear. Once known as a respected Spartan, Hunter now appears to represent the kind of oppressive power the order was meant to resist.
Metro 2039 follows a new protagonist, The Stranger, whose anger towards Hunter drives the story deeper into the Metro‘s dark heart. That conflict gives the new game a personal edge, with 4A Games shifting the focus towards a different perspective within the tunnels beneath Moscow.
The Shatun and Breaching Charge Expand Survival Tools
The gameplay trailer also introduces The Shatun, a new stealth weapon designed for quieter encounters in the hostile corridors. A new breaching charge also joins the player’s arsenal, suggesting more ways to approach locked paths, fortified spaces, and tense encounters.
For returning fans, the trailer looks like a deliberate return to the series’ more oppressive roots. The footage highlights close-quarters stealth, limited visibility, environmental danger, and the familiar pressure of making every resource count.
Keeping the Series’ Immersive Survival Identity Alive
Beyond combat, Metro 2039 appears to preserve the series’ diegetic survival details, where the world itself communicates vital information through equipment, environmental cues, and tactile interactions rather than constant interface prompts.

That has long been part of the franchise’s defining strengths. Whether checking gear, watching ammunition, navigating dark tunnels, or pushing onto the surface, the series has always worked best when survival feels physical and immediate.
With its February 2027 launch window now confirmed, Metro 2039 gives 4A Games a chance to return to the tension and political decay of Moscow’s underground world while introducing a new protagonist, new tools, and a new enemy shaping the fate of the Metro.
