Nagoshi Studio Future Faces Fresh Speculation After Famitsu Feature
The future of Nagoshi Studio is once again being questioned, this time because of a small but noticeable detail in Famitsu’s upcoming 40th anniversary coverage.
As reported by Automaton, Famitsu is preparing a special feature focused on 52 prominent Japanese game creators, with Toshihiro Nagoshi among them. That alone would not usually raise eyebrows, as Nagoshi remains one of Japan’s most recognisable developers, having helped shape beloved franchises such as Yakuza, Daytona USA, Super Monkey Ball and SpikeOut during his long career at SEGA.
What caught fans’ attention instead was how Nagoshi was presented in Famitsu’s promotional material. While many creators were listed with studio or company affiliations, Nagoshi was listed simply as a “game creator,” with no mention of Nagoshi Studio. With the studio already facing months of uncertainty, the detail has added more fuel to ongoing speculation around the studio and its debut project, Gang of Dragon.
Gang of Dragon Was Already In A Difficult Position
Nagoshi Studio was formed after Toshihiro Nagoshi left SEGA, backed by NetEase and with the ambition to create a major new console and PC game.
That project was eventually revealed as Gang of Dragon during The Game Awards 2025. The debut trailer featured Korean actor Ma Dong-seok and showed a crime action game set around Tokyo’s Kabukicho area, immediately drawing comparisons to Nagoshi’s earlier work on Yakuza and Like a Dragon.
However, the project ran into trouble soon after its reveal. Reports earlier this year said NetEase planned to stop funding Nagoshi Studio from May, with Gang of Dragon reportedly needing around $44.4 million more to complete development.
At the time, Nagoshi Studio was reportedly looking for new backers. There has been no major public update since then confirming whether another publisher or investor has stepped in.
Website Issues Added To The Concern
The uncertainty grew further when Nagoshi Studio’s official website later appeared to go offline. The studio’s YouTube channel had also previously disappeared before returning without content, adding to the feeling that something had changed behind the scenes.
Those signs still fall short of official confirmation. Websites can go down for technical or administrative reasons, and a missing company name in a magazine teaser does not prove that a studio no longer exists. Still, when placed alongside NetEase’s reported funding withdrawal and the lack of new Gang of Dragon updates, fans are understandably reading the Famitsu listing more closely than they normally would.
No Official Shutdown Has Been Confirmed
For now, neither Toshihiro Nagoshi nor NetEase has announced that Nagoshi Studio has shut down. There has also been no formal cancellation notice for Gang of Dragon. That leaves the situation in an uncomfortable middle ground.
The game has not officially been cancelled, but the public signs around the project have become increasingly quiet. The studio’s future appears to depend on whether new funding can be secured, whether the game’s assets can be carried forward, or whether Nagoshi’s next project emerges under a different structure entirely.
Considering Nagoshi’s reputation, many fans will still be hoping this is not the end of his post-SEGA journey. Until there is a direct statement, though, the safest reading is that Nagoshi Studio and Gang of Dragon remain deeply uncertain.
