Eric Baptizat Ubisoft Return Marks Another Leadership Shift for Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft has brought back another familiar name for the future of Assassin’s Creed. Eric Baptizat, best known as Game Director on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, has returned to the company as Game Director for the entire brand. The move was confirmed by Jean Guesdon, Head of Content for the franchise, through a LinkedIn post.

It is a notable return for one of the series’ most experienced creative leads, especially as Ubisoft continues reshaping how its biggest franchises are managed under Vantage Studios.

Baptizat Has a Long History With Franchise

Baptizat’s connection goes well beyond Valhalla. During his previous 16-year run at Ubisoft, he held major design roles across several important entries, including Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Unity, and Origins.

That gives him experience across very different eras of the franchise, from the naval adventure of Edward Kenway to the larger open-world RPG direction that later defined Origins and Valhalla. That range matters. Assassin’s Creed has spent years balancing competing expectations from fans who prefer tighter stealth-driven design, players who enjoy the RPG formula, and newcomers who came in through the more recent open-world entries.

Bringing back someone with experience across those shifts suggests Ubisoft wants more continuity at the top of the brand.

From EA Motive Back to Ubisoft

Baptizat left Ubisoft in 2021 and joined EA Motive, where he directed the Dead Space remake. That project was well received for updating the survival horror classic while keeping the core identity of the original intact.

He later worked on Battlefield 6 as Game Design Director, adding another major AAA project to his recent track record. His return now gives Ubisoft a senior creative figure who understands both the history of Assassin’s Creed and the demands of modern blockbuster production.

His Next AC Project Is Still Unknown

Ubisoft has not announced which specific Assassin’s Creed game Baptizat will be attached to. His new title points to a broader leadership role for the brand, rather than confirmation that he is directing one particular upcoming game. At the time of writing, Ubisoft has not publicly connected him to Assassin’s Creed Hexe, Jade, Invictus, or any unannounced project.

Still, his return arrives during a major transition period for the series. Ubisoft has placed the franchise under Vantage Studios, the new subsidiary also overseeing Far Cry and Rainbow Six. That structure gives the franchise a more dedicated leadership setup after years of uneven reception, big commercial swings, and changing player expectations.

A Reassuring Move, But Not a Fix on Its Own

Baptizat’s return will likely be welcomed by many long-time fans, especially those who still hold Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla in high regard. At the same time, one appointment will not decide the future. The series still needs clear creative direction, stronger release discipline, and a better balance between scale, stealth, narrative, and exploration.

What the move does provide is experience. Baptizat has helped shape several different versions of Assassin’s Creed, left Ubisoft, delivered high-profile work elsewhere, and now returns at a moment when the brand is being reorganised for its next phase. For a franchise as large and complicated, that kind of institutional knowledge could make a world of difference.
