GTA V Free Upgrade Removes The Current-Gen Paywall
Rockstar Games is now offering a free upgrade for eligible Grand Theft Auto V owners on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, giving more players a route to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions without paying again.
The move is notable because the current-generation versions of GTA V previously launched as separate paid releases. Now, players with qualifying last-gen copies can switch to the newer console versions and carry their progress.
The upgrade supports migration for both Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters, making it easier for players who have spent years building their Los Santos lives to continue on newer hardware.
GTA V Keeps Selling Despite Its Age
Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the most successful games ever released, with lifetime sales now well past 200 million copies.
That makes Rockstar’s decision more interesting. GTA V has continued to sell steadily across multiple console generations, even more than 10 years after its original launch. In most cases, a publisher might be expected to keep monetising a game with that kind of long-tail demand for as long as possible.
Instead, Rockstar is removing one more barrier for players still on older platforms. That could simply be a goodwill move, but the timing also makes it hard for players not to read into it.

Fans Are Watching GTA Online’s Last-Gen Future
The most popular theory among fans is that Rockstar may be preparing to move more GTA Online players to current-generation hardware ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI. That does not mean support for older consoles is ending soon. Rockstar has not announced any shutdown plans for GTA Online on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, and there is no confirmed timeline for any last-gen phase-out.
Still, the free upgrade gives remaining players a clearer migration path. If Rockstar eventually decides to scale back support for older consoles, it will be easier to do so once more players have had a no-cost path to the newer versions. This would also align with the broader direction of GTA Online, where the most advanced version of the game already runs on current-generation consoles and PC Enhanced.
GTA Online Still Has New Content Ahead
Rockstar is not done with GTA Online yet. New content tied to The Kortz Center Heist is planned for July, giving the long-running multiplayer game another update before GTA VI arrives.
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With that date moving closer, the free GTA V upgrade feels like part of a wider effort to tidy up the series’ current-gen ecosystem before Rockstar fully shifts attention to Vice City and Leonida.
For now, players on eligible last-gen versions have a straightforward win. The upgrade is free, progress can carry over, and Los Santos remains very much alive heading into another major summer update.
