Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Gameplay Details Show How Players Will Fly

Bandai Namco has shared new gameplay details for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, giving players a closer look at how the next entry in the long-running flight action series will handle controls, camera views, aircraft progression, and customisation.

Ahead of release, Bandai Namco has outlined several core systems designed to make the game approachable for newer players while still giving series veterans room to fly with greater precision.

The publisher also confirmed a limited early purchase bonus for the PlayStation 5 package edition. Players who pick up the physical PS5 version will be able to receive an exclusive Challenge Coin, while stocks last at authorised retailers.

Controls and Camera Views Offer Familiar Ace Combat Options

As with previous entries, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will feature two control schemes. Standard controls are designed for more intuitive play, letting players turn the aircraft by tilting the left stick left or right.

Expert controls are aimed at players who want more precise manoeuvring. This scheme uses roll and pitch to turn the aircraft, making it better suited to those who want the feel of more traditional flight in the series’ arcade action structure.

Players can also choose between three camera views: Third Person, HUD, and Cockpit. It is a familiar set of options for ACE COMBAT, but still important given how much of the game’s appeal comes from scale, speed, and visibility during dogfights.

Cloudly Technology Adds More Than Visual Spectacle

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Cloudly Tech

One of the biggest technical hooks in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is Cloudly, Bandai Namco’s proprietary middleware engine built to create the most layered cloudscapes in the series so far. The system is designed to deliver dense cloud corridors, wide skies, sunbeams, atmospheric effects, and dramatic gaps in the clouds. However, Bandai Namco also emphasises that the improved sky is not just a visual upgrade.

Clouds, contrails, smoke, and reflections are being used as readable visual cues during combat. In practice, that should make the sky feel more useful during missions, giving players more information to observe before deciding how to pursue, evade, or reposition.

Aircraft Progression Returns Through the Aircraft Tree

Customisation will once again play a major role. Players can earn Military Result Points, or MRP, in Campaign Mode and spend them on aircraft, upgrade parts, and special weaponry through a branching Aircraft Tree. Unlocking aircraft and parts opens later tiers with stronger performance options, encouraging players to think carefully about which route they want to take first. Bandai Namco says players who thoroughly explore the game will eventually be able to unlock all aircraft, parts, and special weaponry.

Upgrade parts are split into BODY, ARMS, and MISC categories. These can improve aircraft performance, enhance armaments, or add useful effects such as better stealth aircraft detection and protection against ice build up.

Aircraft Roster Includes Fan Favourite Fighters

Bandai Namco also revealed several playable aircraft coming to Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. The current list includes the F-14D Super Tomcat, A-10C Thunderbolt II, Mirage 2000-5, EA-6B Prowler, F-35C Lightning II, EA-18G Growler, F-15C Eagle, F-4E Phantom II, Su-34 Fullback, Su-25SM Frogfoot, Su-57 Felon, and MiG-31B Foxhound.

The roster covers fighter jets, attack aircraft, multi-role aircraft, and electronic warfare aircraft, giving players a wide range of roles to build around. Skins and emblems can also be unlocked by completing in-game conditions, with campaign customisation becoming available after clearing the story.

Online Mode will unlock skin and emblem customisation from the start. With its mix of familiar series systems and new sky technology, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve looks set to lean into both spectacle and player choice when it takes off this October.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on October 2 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
