God of War Laufey Has Been a Long-Term Sony Santa Monica Project

Sony Santa Monica finally revealed God of War Laufey earlier this month, giving fans their first proper look at Faye’s own adventure after years of rumours surrounding the future of the franchise. Instead of returning to Kratos as the sole focus, the new PlayStation 5 entry places Laufey, better known as Faye, at the centre of the story.

The game follows her into the Everywhen, an afterlife realm where gods and creatures from different mythologies appear to be drawn together. The reveal immediately stood out because of how different Faye feels compared to Kratos. Faster movement, more acrobatic combat, and a more magical world all help God of War Laufey feel like a distinct extension of the modern God of War era rather than a simple character swap.

Deborah Ann Woll Says Cory Barlog Pitched the Game in 2018

In an interview with CGM, Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Faye, revealed that it has long been coming since Cory Barlog first pitched God of War Laufey to her back in 2018. That timing is notable, as 2018 was also the year God of War relaunched the series through its Norse saga. It suggests Sony Santa Monica may have been thinking about Faye’s larger role in the franchise much earlier than fans realised.

Woll reportedly said she had known about the project for nearly a decade, making the reveal a relief after years of silence. Given how closely guarded Sony Santa Monica’s major projects usually are, the comment also underscores just how long-term the studio’s planning for the modern God of War universe has been.

Phranque Was Apparently There From the Beginning

One of the more surprising details from Woll’s comments involves Phranque, the mysterious cube companion played by Jack Quaid. According to Woll, Cory Barlog had already shown her early concept material featuring both Faye and Phranque during those initial conversations. She also described Phranque as deeply connected to the game’s lore, suggesting the character is more than a strange sidekick added late in development.

That has naturally led to fan speculation over how Phranque fits into the Everywhen and what the cube could mean for the wider mythology Sony Santa Monica is building. For now, though, the studio has not explained the character’s true role.

Faye’s Story Expands Beyond Norse Mythology

God of War: Laufey appears to push the series beyond its Norse foundations without fully abandoning the emotional threads established in God of War and God of War Ragnarök.

The game follows Faye after her death, as she fights to protect the future she left behind for Kratos and Atreus. The Everywhen setting also gives Sony Santa Monica room to explore gods and forces from multiple mythologies, creating a broader playground for future stories.

That makes God of War Laufey especially interesting. It is not simply filling in Faye’s past, but also appears to be expanding what the franchise can become after Ragnarök.

God of War Laufey Still Has No Release Date

Sony Santa Monica has not announced a release date for God of War Laufey at the time of writing. The game is currently confirmed for PlayStation 5, with the platform listing it as coming soon.

For now, Woll’s comments give fans a clearer sense of how long the project has been part of Sony Santa Monica’s plans. Faye’s journey may be new to players, but behind the scenes, it seems God of War Laufey has been waiting for its moment since the beginning of the Norse saga.
