Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow Tactical RPG Takes Arc System Works Into New Territory

Arc System Works is best known for fighting games, and for good reason. Between Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and several licensed projects, the studio has built a reputation for sharp mechanics, striking anime visuals, and a level of style that few developers in the genre can match.

Even so, Arc System Works has never been only a fighting game studio. Over the years, it has worked across beat ’em ups, action games, adventure titles, and publishing projects beyond its most famous competitive releases.

Now, the company is stepping into dark urban fantasy with Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow, a new tactical timeline RPG co-developed by Arc System Works and UnitePlus. The game is set to launch on September 24 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.

Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow Is Set in a Fallen Tokyo

Revealed during Arc System Works’ latest showcase, Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow immediately stands out through its anime-inspired presentation and bleak Tokyo setting. The game takes place in 2030, after a calamity known as the Collapse leaves Tokyo broken and unstable. Reality itself has begun to erode, and grotesque entities known as Aberrations now stalk the ruined city.

The story follows Souma Hoshigami, a young man who becomes a human and monster hybrid after being attacked while working a delivery job, and Rena Hizuki, an investigator from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Public Safety Department, Foreign Affairs Fifth Division. Together, they investigate the truth behind the Collapse and the Aberrations spreading through Shibuya.

Tactical Timeline Combat Lets Players Read Enemy Attacks

The biggest gameplay hook is what Arc System Works calls a Tactical Counter-Timeline RPG system. Rather than relying on traditional turn-based battles, Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow uses a visible timeline that shows the timing and nature of incoming enemy attacks.

That gives players a chance to predict enemy movements, queue skills, interrupt attacks, apply counters, and manage combat flow with more precision. The idea is not just to react after an enemy acts, but to read the timeline and stop threats before they fully unfold.

It is a strong fit for Arc System Works’ usual strengths. Even outside fighting games, the studio’s best work often revolves around timing, impact, and readable visual feedback.

Time Control Adds Another Layer to RPG Strategy

Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow also lets players slow down or pause the action during combat. This gives them room to analyse enemy behaviour, track cooldowns, and plan stronger counterplays before committing to their next move.

That system could help the game bridge two different RPG instincts. On one side, it has the tactical planning of a timeline-based battle system. On the other hand, it is clearly trying to keep fights visually dynamic and immediate, closer to action games than slow menu combat.

If the final game can balance both sides, Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow could stand out in a crowded RPG market by turning enemy prediction into its main strategic tool.

Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow Launches in September

Players will not have to wait long to see how the system comes together. Qliphah in Providence’s Shadow is scheduled to launch on September 24 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.

The quick turnaround makes the reveal more surprising, especially for a brand-new IP with such a specific combat hook. For Arc System Works, it is another reminder that the company’s ambitions now stretch well beyond the fighting game space.
