id Software has reportedly been hit hard by Microsoft’s latest Xbox restructuring, with new filings indicating 136 affected roles at the legendary Doom developer. The cuts come as Xbox continues one of the most aggressive resets in its recent history, with thousands of roles being removed across Microsoft’s gaming division and several studios facing major organisational changes.

For many players, id Software seemed like one of the safer studios in the wider Xbox portfolio. The developer remains one of the most respected names in first-person shooters, with Doom, Quake, and id Tech forming a major part of gaming history. That makes the scale of the reported layoffs especially surprising.

Texas Filing Points to 136 Affected Roles

According to data from the Texas Workforce Commission, 136 roles connected to ZeniMax’s Richardson, Texas, operations are being eliminated. Game Developer reports that 96 of those roles were based at id Software’s Richardson headquarters, with another 40 remote employees also affected.

Based on the studio’s previously reported headcount of around 185 employees, the cuts would represent a major reduction in id Software’s US workforce. That scale immediately raises questions about how Microsoft plans to maintain momentum at one of its most technically important studios.

Questions Remain Around id Tech and Remote Teams

It is still unclear how the cuts are distributed across departments. As id Software is not only a game development studio. it is also the home of id Tech, the proprietary engine behind the studio’s modern releases and one of the key technical assets inside Microsoft’s gaming portfolio.

Reports have not yet clarified whether the affected remote roles include staff attached to engine development, support functions, quality assurance, production, or other parts of the studio. Microsoft has also not provided a detailed breakdown of which teams were most affected. Until that becomes clearer, it will be difficult to know exactly how the layoffs may shape id Software’s long-term output.

DOOM’s Recent Momentum Makes the Cuts More Surprising

The reported layoffs also arrive during a period when id Software should, from the outside, appear strong. Doom: The Dark Ages helped keep the franchise at the centre of Xbox’s first-party lineup, while recent content support and more DLC showed that Doom remains one of Microsoft’s most reliable action brands.

That is why these cuts feel different from restructuring around underperforming or uncertain projects. id Software is not a marginal studio inside Xbox, it is one of the division’s clearest centres of technical and creative credibility.

Xbox’s Reset Continues to Raise Bigger Questions

The id Software layoffs add another layer of difficulty to Microsoft’s broader Xbox reset. The company has been trying to streamline its gaming business after years of acquisitions, rising costs, questions about Game Pass growth, hardware pricing pressure, and uneven first-party momentum. From a business perspective, that may explain why Microsoft is cutting across the division so aggressively.

For players and developers, however, the concern is more direct. If a studio as established and successful as id Software can reportedly lose such a large portion of its workforce, few teams in the Xbox ecosystem will feel completely insulated.
