Final Fantasy VII Revelation Weapons Take Centre Stage at Gamescom

The final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is dealing with some appropriately enormous problems. Square Enix brought Final Fantasy VII Revelation to Gamescom Opening Night Live with a new Planet’s Crisis trailer, putting the legendary Weapons at the centre of the action as Cloud and company race towards their final confrontation with Sephiroth.

The showcase was one of the biggest appearances during a packed evening, which you can catch up on through our full Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 roundup. For longtime fans, however, seeing Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon and Ultima Weapon brought into the remake trilogy was difficult to overlook.

Ruby, Emerald and Ultima Weapon Return

In the original Final Fantasy VII, the Weapons awaken as enormous guardians created by the Planet to defend itself during a crisis. That idea remains intact in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, although their scale has understandably increased alongside everything else in the remake project.

The trailer shows the party confronting them across very different environments, including desert terrain, the ocean floor and aerial battles involving the Highwind. Square Enix says some will also appear as ultra-challenging endgame encounters in homage to their infamous battles in the original game.

Emerald and Ruby Weapon in particular have long been remembered as some of Final Fantasy VII‘s toughest optional challenges, so translating those fights into the remake trilogy’s action-heavy combat system should be interesting.

The Highwind Opens Up the Entire Planet

The Weapons are only part of how Final Fantasy VII Revelation is increasing the scale. Players will eventually gain access to the Highwind and can freely travel across the planet, choosing where to go and which problems to tackle first. Parachuting allows the party to drop directly from the airship, while grappling hooks and Chocobos provide further ways to move around once back on the ground.

That freedom also plays into the wider story. With Meteor approaching and crises unfolding across the planet, players can determine which locations and characters to assist first, with some decisions capable of influencing aspects of their stories.

Typhon and the New FITS System Join Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Gamescom also provided a better look at some of the new tools available to the party. Typhon returns as a summon, while the newly revealed FITS system gives characters outfits tied to specialised combat roles inspired by traditional Final Fantasy jobs.

The trailer shows Cloud wearing a Warrior FITS and Tifa taking on a Black Mage-inspired role, with the outfits granting new abilities rather than simply serving as cosmetic changes. Combined with a fully assembled playable party and an expanded version of the trilogy’s hybrid combat system, Revelation is shaping up to push considerably further than simply recreating the remaining portions of the 1997 original.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches worldwide in spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
