The Witcher 3 Steam Player Record Broken After 11 Years
More than 11 years after its original release, CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just achieved something it never managed during its launch year: a new all-time concurrent player record on Steam.
The surge follows the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, a free upgrade for existing owners that goes far beyond simply sharpening up Geralt’s surroundings. Alongside visual and performance improvements, Remastered reworks combat, animations and character progression, adds expanded mod support and introduces several quality-of-life and accessibility changes.
It follows CD Projekt Red’s earlier decision to make Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine available at no additional cost to existing base-game owners, all while preparing for the new Songs of the Past expansion arriving in 2027.
We previously broke down the wider gameplay, progression and visual changes coming with The Witcher 3 Remastered, and plenty of players appear to have decided that was reason enough to return to the Path.
The Witcher 3 Passes 120,000 Concurrent Steam Players
According to SteamDB’s player tracking, The Witcher 3 reached more than 120,000 concurrent players following the launch of Remastered, setting a new record for the RPG. At the time of reporting, that peak had reached approximately 120,975 players, comfortably surpassing the previous record of 103,329 set on January 5, 2020.
That earlier resurgence came shortly after the debut of Netflix’s The Witcher, while the game’s original 2015 launch topped out at roughly 92,000 concurrent Steam players. For an 11-year-old single-player RPG to reach its highest-ever Steam concurrency now is already unusual, especially since its previous record came almost five years after launch.
Remastered Is Only the Beginning of Geralt’s Return
Steam only provides part of the picture. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is also available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and the Microsoft Store, but those platforms don’t provide the same publicly accessible, real-time player data.
That makes it impossible to compare the scale of the resurgence elsewhere, but Steam alone shows substantial renewed interest in Geralt’s adventure.
The timing could hardly be better for CD Projekt Red either. Songs of the Past arrives in 2027 as the game’s third major expansion, giving returning players another reason to stick around once they finish exploring everything Remastered has changed.
More than a decade after The Witcher 3 first launched, Geralt’s latest comeback has somehow taken the game somewhere it has never been before.
