The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered Launches as a Free Upgrade
CD Projekt Red had more than Geralt’s new adventure waiting at Gamescom Opening Night Live, closing the show by officially announcing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered.
Launching on September 29, the new version is designed to modernise the acclaimed RPG more than 11 years after its original release. Existing owners on qualifying platforms will receive the remastered upgrade for free, while native Nintendo Switch 2 and Battle.net versions are also arriving on the same day.
The announcement followed the first proper look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, giving Geralt a surprisingly prominent role at this year’s Gamescom.
Combat, Progression and Visuals Are Being Reworked
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is more than another resolution and performance update.
CD Projekt Red is revisiting several parts of the original experience, including sword combat, character progression and finishing attacks. Visual and performance improvements are also part of the package, with the studio aiming to make Geralt’s adventure feel more at home alongside newer action RPGs.
Not every change has been detailed yet, with CD Projekt Red using Gamescom presentations and REDstreams throughout the week to go deeper into individual improvements.
The important distinction is that the original game remains at the centre of the remaster. This is not a remake rebuilding The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from scratch, but a broader modernisation of a game that has continued to receive support long after launch.
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine Are Now Free
CD Projekt Red also had another surprise for existing players.
Both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are now included with the base game at no additional cost. Players who previously owned only The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can access both expansions simply by updating the game, which is available as a free download on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Digital storefronts are also shifting towards the Complete Edition, bringing the base game and both expansions together as the standard package. It means anyone returning for Remastered will have access to Geralt’s two acclaimed existing expansions before Songs of the Past adds another adventure in 2027.
The Witcher 3 Remastered Arrives September 29
Existing owners on supported platforms can upgrade without paying extra, while Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are available free from August 25. More than a decade after Geralt first rode onto our screens, CD Projekt Red is somehow finding another reason for players to return to the Path.
