The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel Finally Has an Official Name

Eight years after Bethesda Game Studios first showed a distant landscape and a logo at E3 2018, its next journey through Tamriel finally has a proper name. Bethesda Game Studios has officially revealed The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, unveiling the subtitle at the conclusion of its 40th anniversary retrospective on November 3.

Todd Howard introduced the reveal before the presentation transitioned into the newly confirmed logo, ending years of speculation surrounding what the long-awaited RPG would actually be called. The announcement follows our earlier coverage of The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, when the name was still circulating before Bethesda made it official.

No gameplay accompanied the reveal, but Bethesda did provide one particularly important piece of information: players are heading to Hammerfell.

Sentinel Confirms the Long-Rumoured Hammerfell Setting

The short name-reveal teaser ends with a passage attributed to Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell in 4E 206, referencing a future lost and “sands of time scattered by fate”. Bethesda later said it was pleased to finally reveal both the name and location of The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.

Sentinel itself is one of Hammerfell’s major cities, meaning years of speculation surrounding the province were ultimately pointing in the right direction. The setting should provide a considerable contrast to Skyrim’s colder northern reaches. Hammerfell is home to the Redguards and encompasses desert landscapes, coastal settlements and the Iliac Bay, although Bethesda has not yet revealed how much of the province players will actually explore.

The studio also stopped short of providing new story details beyond the cryptic teaser, leaving the significance of High Queen Iradne, the Moth Priest and the referenced Elder Scroll unclear.

The Elder Scrolls VI Sentinel Is Now Bethesda’s Main Development Focus

While substantive details remain scarce, production has progressed considerably since the project’s original reveal. In July, Bethesda confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel had become its primary development focus, with the majority of Bethesda Game Studios working on the next mainline entry.

The game is being developed using Creation Engine 3, the same shared technology platform Bethesda intends to use for future RPGs, including Fallout 5. The studio said at the time that it was already playing the game internally and was happy with how development was progressing.

That represents a significant shift from the years when resources were primarily directed towards completing and supporting Starfield. Still, Bethesda is tempering expectations around when players will actually see more.

Bethesda Says More Details Are Still Some Time Away

No release date, launch window or confirmed platform list accompanied the title announcement. Bethesda followed the reveal by saying development continues, but warned that it will be “some time” before it is ready to share more about The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.

That means the November reveal is ultimately more symbolic than substantial. Players now know the title and where the next adventure will take place, but almost everything about its story, gameplay systems and release plans remains under wraps.

After eight years, however, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel has finally progressed from a distant landscape and a Roman numeral to something more tangible. The road to Hammerfell remains long, but at least players now know exactly where it is heading.
